at other location. The mdf file for this database is of size 153 GB. So as lot of solutions to this problem say to set the file size to autogrowth because I have sufficient space as of now (107 GB). But I am not sure about the consequences and also by how much size I sql server error log should allow the autogrowth? Any urgent help on this will be highly appreciated. You can consider the autogrowth performance based on this link. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315512 Nag Pal MCTS/MCITP (SQL Server 2005/2008) :: Please Mark Answer/vote if it is helpful :: I would disagree with 10% growth. Since its in percentage, every growth would be bigger in size.. Assume that db size is 100 GB, it would grow 10 GB (which is high) and it would become 110 GB and next growth would be 11 GB.. and it increases exponentially. Filegrowth time would be included in response time by application. I would suggest to keep fix growth of 512 MB. The error message is given below. ERROR 1101: Could not allocate a new page for database because of insufficient http://www.sqlservergeeks.com/sql-server-error-message-1101-insufficient-disk-space/ disk space in filegroup. Create the necessary space by dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting Autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. The error message also suggests possible solutions to resolve the error. The space can be cleared by dropping a large unwanted table, adding additional files to filegroup to a different storage if existing storage is full or by setting Autogrowth setting for files to ON. If the storage is full, additional files can be created on new disk/storage using the T-SQL shown below Transact-SQL USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [mydb] ADD FILE (NAME = N'newdatafile', FILENAME = N'E:\mydb\newdatafile.ndf', SIZE = 4096KB, FILEGROWTH = 102400KB) TO FILEGROUP [SECONDARY] GO 12345678 USE [master]GOALTER DATABASE [mydb] ADD FILE (NAME = N'newdatafile', FILENAME = N'E:\mydb\newdatafile.ndf', SIZE = 4096KB, FILEGROWTH = 102400KB) TO FILEGROUP [SECONDARY]GO The above TSQL adds a file ‘newdatafile’ to Secondary filegroup of mydb database. The new file is created with initial size of 1 MB and Autogrowth of 100 MB. To disable Autogrowth set FILEGROWTH to 0. The current size and Autogrowth size should be decided based on database size and careful capacity plannin

The poster is obviously asking for clarification on why this is happening. –general exception Jan 21 '12 at 21:37 1 @generalexception - As the message is in fact very clear it helps if they explain what they don't understand. Are we working from a starting point where they don't know what tempdb is even or why it is related to their query? –Martin Smith Jan 22 '12 at 14:56 2 Apologies Martin, you should assume I know what tempdb is, what I was getting at was what are the general causes of this error message, i will try to be crystal clear next time so as not to cause confusion or doubt. From now one if i paste an error message I will go through each part and say whether I understand it or not. –JsonStatham Jan 23 '12 at 9:31 1 Again, apologies, where would we be if we didnt have people like you to point these things out... –JsonStatham Jan 23 '12 at 10:30 No problem. Could not allocate a new page for database ‘tempdb' because of insufficient disk space in filegroup ‘PRIMARY'. Create the necessary space by dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. We have configured the tempdb on J:\ which has only 10GB space. TempDB has occupied the 10GB space. We have tried to shrink the tempdb but no luck, after sometime we are not able to even right click the TempDB and neither execute the some system stored procedures (sp_who2) Solution 1 If you don’t want to restart the SQL Server you can add the another data file to different drive in tempdb ALTER DATABASE tempdb ADD FILE ( NAME = tempdev1, FILENAME = ‘E:\tempdb1.mdf', SIZE = 5MB, MAXSIZE = 5000MB, FILEGROWTH = 10MB ) TO FILEGROUP [PRIMARY]; GO Solution 2 If the disk space is available on the drive where tempdb residing you can change file MAX SIZE option to allocate more space. Solution 3 Restart the SQL Services, it will create the new instance of tempdb Solution 4 For user databases with restricted growth you can use the AUTO GROWTH option true or increase the file max size Note: You can't move the tempdb files, if you execute the ALTER command to move the tempdb files, it will just mark the file to diffrent drive and will create the file the target drive on SQL Server restart only 18.520469 73.856621 Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to email (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Like this:Like Loading...
