Sp_configure Locks
Points: 63, Visits: 33 For the last 2 months, I've been having trouble with locks on my old sql server. The following error ocurrs about 4-10 times per dayDESCRIPTION: Error: 1204, Severity: 19, State: 1The SQL Server cannot http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/126835/what-does-error-1204-severity-19-state-4-mean obtain a LOCK resource at this time. Rerun your statement when there are fewer active users or ask the system administrator to check the SQL Server lock and memory configuration.I'm having trouble putting my finger on it. I've done a couple of things:1) More than once, I've create a trace file on my local machine, monitoring the events on the old server:Lock:deadlock, Lock: deadlock chain, Lock: Timeout, and SQL:BatchCompleted. The trace file created by those events really http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic141154-92-1.aspx didn't tell me anything meaningful. I never get a full deadlock type transaction. It seems to always fix itself -- I just continue to get the e-mails that there was a problem. The trace showed me the sql statements, but there wasn't anything unusual about it that I could recognize. The statements were quite varied -- so I couldn't nail down a specific application or statement causing the problem. The other thought I had was that my equiment is simply too old and over-run. Don't laugh-- it's Dual 450 processor with 2GB RAM. It was running W2k, upgraded from NT 4.0. It's really a secondary box so it's not used too much. The most active application on it is Epolicy Orchestrator (Mcaffee). 2) So, this weekend, I formatted the serverand installed W-2003. I reinstalled SQL, restored Master DB and got it all the databases back up. It's certainly an improvement from where I was at, but when I got in this morning I noticed that I got another one of those dreaded e-mails from the system. Obviously, there is still something wrong.Any ideas or input would be appreciated. I'm about ready to give in and call Microsoft. How can I fix and proceed with ALTER DATABASE COLLATE procedure? ALTER DATABASE My database COLLATE Latin1_General_100_CI_AS_KS ; Msg 5075, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The object 'CK_MyCheckConstraint_Uid' is dependent on database collation. The database collation cannot be changed if a schema-bound object depends on it. Remove the dependencies state 1 sql on the database collation and then retry the operation. Answer: The reason for this message is you haven’t met one or more of these conditions: 1) Must have an exclusive lock on the database - read more on SQL Server ALTER DATABASE , change collation and exclusive lock 2) No schema-bound object can be dependent on the database collation. Schema-bound objects include: User defined functions (UDF) and views created with SCHEMABINDING 3) CHECK CONSTRAINTS 4) Computed Columns 5) Table-valued functions with character columns using collations inherited from the default database collation In the case above , it appears there is a CHECK CONSTRAINT dependant on the database collation. Proceed with scripting out the dependant objects, drop the objects change the database collation and recreate the the oblects from the scripts. Make sure you have a BACKUP in place before you proceed with these steps!! Rerun your statement when there are fewer active users. Ask the database administrator to check the lock and memory configuration for this instance, or to check for long-running transactions.” The message appeared during the daily SQL Server Error log report which checks for SQL Server Error log messages of interest to DBAs. The SQL error 1204 message appears when memory thresholds are met. SQL Server cannot obtain more memory from the Operating System. The memory is used by other resources or SQL Server has max server memory configured. Lock manager doesn’t use more than 60% of memory available to SQL Server Possible Fixes 1) Release other applications using resources on the OS – use Task Manager to identify other applications using the largest amount of memory. Most DBAs attempt to maintain SQL Server on dedicated servers , but management software can creep in – such as Anti-Virus , monitoring agents and security analysis. 2) Increase the SQL Server max memory setting, if extra memory is available . 3) Use the sys.dm_tran_locks view to identify the session holding the largest amount of locks and kill the process.
