Fix Stack Overflow Error
Pi development community members exhibition Document Actions What's a "stack overflow"? Up to Table of stack overflow error windows xp Contents I get the message "error: stack overflow" when I connect two objects together! A "stack overflow" happens when you have asked Pd to compute a recursive operation,

and this operation causes Pd to run out of memory. Often this is the first step before crashing Pd! A common example of a recursive operation which could cause this error is the classic counter, using [float] and [+ 1]. If the output of [float] is connected to the input of [+ 1], and the stack overflow javascript error output of [+ 1] is connected to the right-most ("cold") inlet of [float], then a "bang" message sent to the left-most ("hot") [float] will output a number which increases by one every time that message is sent. If, however, the output of [+ 1] is connected to the left-most ("hot") inlet of [float], then sending the message [bang( to the left inlet of [float] will have a different effect. It will ask [float] and [+ 1] to add numbers together as fast as the computer will let them do it. Because Pd will not stop and ask you "are you sure you want to do this?", this operation will quickly use up all the memory resources which Pd has, and cause a stack overflow. this FAQ was originally published under the GPL at Pd's FLOSSmanual by IOhannes m zmoelnig — last modified 2008-05-07 10:38 AM puredata.info is hosted and serviced by IEM as a contribution to the Pd-community using Plone , see Impressum.

Note however, that a stack overflow usually occurs because you have some too-deep recursion in your patch, and any of the involved objects might emit the error. That is, the object you will find is not necessary the cause of the problem (it's just the bearer of bad news), but at least you have a starting point where to look for. share|improve this answer answered Aug 29 at 20:59 umläute 10.9k2252 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. When trying to put the object [pix_film], I get this error: filmQT: Could not initialize quicktime: error -2093 What is the problem? How to fix it? I really need stack overflow error video functionality, as I'm learning how to use this for an art show. puredata share|improve this question edited Jun 8 '15 at 3:57 Max N 583416 asked Jan 22 '14 at 8:53 MaKo 4,9011472142 support.apple.com/kb/ts1875 –rene Jan 22 '14 at 8:55 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted Historically Gem on windows and OS X requires Apple's QuickTime (on linux: libquicktime) for objects using this framework. Current versions remove this dependency by offering other frameworks alternatives, for instance gmerlin, as plugins. Install Apple QuickTime on your Windows, that should fix the error mentioned. share|improve this answer edited Jun 8 '15 at 7:53 umläute 10.9k2252 answered Jan 22 '14 at 21:21 Max N 583416 1 well, no there is no GStreamer based film-backend. but you are right that QuickTime (filmQT, which btw is unrelated to the libquicktime-based filmQT4L) is only usable if you have Apple's QuickTime installed. –umläute Feb 11 '14 at 13:40 @umläute, please edit my answer.
