3 down vote favorite 1 I read the following documentation about compiler and interpreter somewhere :- A compiler searches all the errors of a program and lists them. If the program is error free then it converts the code of program into machine code and then the program can be executed by separate commands. An interpreter checks the errors of a program statement by statement. After checking syntax error java one statement, it converts that statement into machine code and then executes that statement. The process continues until the last statement of program occurs. My doubt came from the following code: int main() { printf("hello") scanf("%d",&j); return 0; } I am using MINGW GCC compiler. When I compile the above code following things happen: Firstly I get the error error: expected ';' before 'scanf()' After I correct the above error then I get the second error error: 'j' undeclared (first use in this function) So I wanted to know that why both the errors are not listed at one time? c compiler-construction error-handling mingw interpreter share|improve this question edited Jan 31 '14 at 9:04 unwind 253k38330460 asked Jan 31 '14 at 8:50 kevin gomes 681518 2 Not all syntax errors can be recovered from. The mistakes may seem obvious to you as a human, but to the compiler the first error makes a nonsense of the subsequent code. –Paul R Jan 31 '14 at 8:52 @PaulR : you mean to say that in this case the compiler work as interpreter –kevin gomes Jan 31 '14 at 8:54 1 The most logical explanation I can
of the code that do not conform to the syntax of the programming language will produce a syntax error. Unlike syntax error c++ logic errors, which are errors in the flow or logic of a

program, syntax errors are small grammatical mistakes, sometimes limited to a single character. For example, a missing

semicolon at the end of a line or an extra bracket at the end of a function may produce a syntax error. In the PHP code below, the second closed http://stackoverflow.com/questions/21475744/confusion-between-compiler-and-interpreter bracket would result in a syntax error since there is only one open bracket in the function. function testFunction() { echo "Just testing."; }} Some software development IDEs check the source code for syntax errors in real-time, while others only generate syntax errors when a program is compiled. Even if a source code file contains one small syntax error, http://techterms.com/definition/syntax_error it will prevent an application from being successfully compiled. Similarly, if you run a script through an interpreter, any syntax errors will prevent the script from completing. In most cases, the compiler or interpreter provides the location (or line number) of the syntax error, making it easy for the programmer to find and fix the error.
