All worked well but when restarting, after the BIOS screen, there was just a blank black screen reading "no system-disk or disk error". Restarting multiple times, Ubuntu started normally. But upon the next restart, the same happened: "no system-disk or disk error" and I needed to repeat this procedure. According to the "disk"-utility, my disk (Toshiba, 120 GB) is 47 Celcius degrees warm and has no disk errors. Is this a Ubuntu-problem or a Grub-Problem (no Grub menue pops up because there is no choice at the start)? 13.04 grub2 laptop startup hp share|improve this question asked Jul 21 '13 at 14:19 someuser 1 No sound more like hardware to me. To resolve this issue, try one of these, and then restart your computer: Remove any CD/DVD from the optical drive Change your computer's boot sequence, to boot from the bootable device. (this is done from the system BIOS) Make sure an OS is installed on the hard drive. If non of these work, may have a hardware problem with your hard driv

The tower is a HP ProLiant that a local computer shop gave away a while ago The hard drive is a new 1TB drive I bought today I tried to install ubuntu from a USB stick (I got a local computer shop to put ubuntu on there for me - they installed this thing called rufus so the usb could be non system disk used as a boot cd. I had a few failed attempts to start installing before I realised I hadn't put the power lead into the hard drive Then I went for the first option 'erase disk and install ubuntu' - clicked install now and it seemed to go through the installation process fine. Got to the point where it told me to restart the computer. I restarted the machine and when it came back on it went back into the installation menus and i realised the boot usb was still in. so I switched the machine off, re-installed ubuntu to be sure; after restarting i removed the usb stick as soon as the light went off. Thought it must be fine now. Computer starts up - on first bios screen there is a line saying no disk (i had got that during installation as well) and then It went to a screen with options for setup (F9 - i think) and something else. It said 'non-system disk or disk error' There was a countdown of 4 seconds before the system rebooted and the same page was displayed. What is happening and what to I need to do to get ubuntu up and running? thanks for your time and help, much appreciated boot 16.04 system-installation share|improve this question asked Sep 14 at 17:03 onepointsix 1 Your BIOS needs to be changed to boot from disk i

The one with a bad harddrive i went into the bios and ran a HDD check from the bios and i get read error, i try it in another laptop, same thing... ok bad HDD. Then i take the HDD from the notebook with a bad MoBo and stick it in the other laptop, this time in the bios, the option to run a HDD check is greyed out, so i set the boot order to USB drive > CD rom > HDD and i stick a xp install disc in.... it waits then "Non System Disc or disc Error" so i try a vista disc, same result, Ubuntu 8.10? Same result. I know all these disc work i have used them before... So i try a LiveUSB ubuntu and a LiveUSB XP same thing... Any suggestions?
