map a P drive and a G drive on a Win7 box on our domain. I can't change the drive letters because every computer in the company has them the same way. When I do a 'net http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/system-error-85-has-occurred-the-local-device-name/d8bfc6c1-2476-4055-920d-89813fd6494d use' it shows no entries. When I run: net use P: \\server\folder The command completed successfully net use G: \\server\folder2 system error 85 has occurred. The local device name is already in use. When I google system error 85, they all say delete the drives and start over. So I do 'net use * /d', but it doesn't delete any drives other than the P. If I navigate https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/429738-system-error-85-while-mapping-a-drive to the folder to map it there, F-J are missing as options, even though none are in use. I've joined and quit the domain, the same thing happens either way. Anyone have any ideas how to get the mapping to work to the correct letter? If so can you change the drive letter assigned to current G. Then try adding your networked drive as G? 5 Datil OP Rob Annable Jan 10, 2014 at 2:08 UTC Are you running command prompt as you or the user? Is the drive letter that is in use, used by removable devices? If so change them to letters at the end of the alphabet using disk management. 1 Anaheim OP gabefroman Jan 10, 2014 at 2:21 UTC Thanks Z-Ethan, it wasn't showing up under My Computer, but Disk Management had the G: assigned. 1 This discussion has been inactive for over a year. is already in use. is one of Microsoft's error messages that is related to mapping network drives. It http://www.maxi-pedia.com/system+error+85+has+occured+local+device+already+in+use+message is one of the error messages that can make your hair grow gray. The System error 85 has occurred error message is also similar to the System error 67 http://www.networksteve.com/windows/topic.php/Can't_create_network_driver_-_system_error_85_-_allready_exist/?TopicId=52795&Posts=4 has occured message. As these two messages demonstrate, Microsoft Windows is in some cases very good in hiding the relevant information from the user, despite attempting to be user-friendly.This system error error message happens most commonly when trying to map a network drive. In a nutshell, this message happens because the network drive letter you are trying to use for another mapping had already been used by some other resource. The System error 85 has occured is most annoying when trying to map a network drive using the NET USE command.System error 85 has system error 85 occurred related to Terminal ServicesTerminal Services is a component of Microsoft Windows that allows a user to access applications and data on a remote computer. In many cases, when you work on a computer in an enterprise setting, your computer often accesses data shared on other servers, network shared folders, or even workstations. For this to happen, your computer needs to run the Terminal Services service. You can find it running in your Services. Now, let's explain where the System error 85 has occurred comes into play. When you try to connect a drive using drive letter that was previously connected to a Distributed File System (DFS) resource, in layman's terms that means to a folder shared on a network, you may receive the following error message:System error 85 has occurred. The local device name is already in use. This error message usually persists for a particular drive letter in that particular Terminal Services session. When a particular Terminal Services session uses a drive letter already associated with some other resource, you cannot use it to map an
the drive is allready in use bla bla bla.. system error 85.. I have tried the net use command with the /delete opton no luck... I have looked through regedit - no luck.. can't you remove any knowledge of a network drive windows 7 might have through Regedit? /Casper "If you never ask you may never learn" March 19th, 2012 8:15am Yes you can, although it would be best to troubleshoot as to why the drive is not properly disconnected. But if you want to remove it through regedit you can have a look at this value: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2 And delete the key relating to the error, then restart the computer and you should be able to add the network drive. Let me know if that works for you. Free Windows Admin Tool Kit Click here and download it now March 19th, 2012 9:23am 1. I have met with this error message in previous versions of Windows http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308337 2. Try to use mapping with parameters: a. Use net use /persistent:noin the logon script. b. Add "net use * /d" command line in the top of the logon script so that the script will clean the all old mapping first. 3. Instead of mapping I use simple script that opens Windows Explorer (WE). I do what is needed, close the WE and the connection is "destroyed" without any trace: explorer.exe \\server\share\folder Regards Milos March 20th, 2012 2:29am Hi guys, Thanks for the answers... !! I currently explorering your suggestions and will return with what we find... Milos Puchta, Thats a very interresting way to "make" network drives.. Im talking about the explorer.exe \\server\share\folder thing. Are you using this yourself or do you have it implementet in a user enviroment? I very interestet in knowing how you implement this to your users if you do that. /Casper"If you never ask you may never learn" Free Windows Admin Tool Kit Click here and download it now March 21st, 2012 3:36am Hi, Firstly, pl
