My HDD in my old memory configuration error system boot halted (from 2002) desktop went bad, so I took it out (so there is now no internal HDD) and am trying to install Windows system halted error dell XP on a USB HDD and use that. I connected the USB HDD and inserted the XP reinstallation CD. When I powered on the PC, I got this screen (sorry for it being a bit blurry, but you how to fix system halted error can still make out all the text). Pushing F1 took me to a page titled "BIOS SETUP UTILITY." I powered off and back on, and got this similar screen where the number representing how much RAM I had slowly increased until it reached the correct 512 MB. Once it hit 512, it went on to a screen where it said "Boot failure: System halted" (the rest of the screen was blank). I can't progress past that,

and I can't seem to get back to the original screen where I could press a key to go to setup. What could the problem be? It started happening as soon as I connected the USB HDD (which is 9 years newer than the computer), so perhaps my BIOS needs to be updated. I don't know how to do that though, and I get the same problem when booting with the USB HDD disconnected. Could it have anything to do with the message on the original screen about the CMOS battery being low? Thanks! EDIT: At some point while the USB HDD was connected, I got this screen. The first thing to do would be to replace the CMOS battery with a nice fresh one. They are cheap and available at any store where watch batteries are sold. Second a BIOS that old probably does not have the capabilities you are trying to use. The USB ports are probably version 1 and will only support slower speeds.
