When you boot the machine, is there a message to press some key to enter setup? BIOS Access Guide One in BIOS setup, look around for a delay setting for the drive. It usually has timing settings like 5 secs., 10 secs., etc., and just basically pauses the boot process for the drive to initialize. Not all BIOS have it. You could also just try hitting the Pause key on your keyboard during the very early stages of the boot process (then Enter to resume) just to see if that makes the drive accessible. But to be honest, new drives, at least, should not need any

Value sound card Zoom external 56K Serial modem The problem is as it says in the subject line. The quirky thing is that I have been having boot problems. Sometimes hangs when booting (usually with the system halted error floppy drive light on), sometimes it would boot fine and other times it would take 5 minutes to boot. Decided to do a rebuild of the drive so I copied all valuable data, did a 'format c:' completed reinstallation of W98se, reloaded the '.inf' files for the motherboard, and on reboot, I receive the 'Drive Not Ready - System Halted' message. A couple things I noticed were that the problems with the boot time appear not to be related to the OS, because some of the delay appears to be while loading the BIOS. Also, when I ran Fdisk, it takes me to the first page (enable large block mode?) and as soon as I hit 'Y', it dumps me back to the DOS prompt. Hope these symptoms look familiar to someone, because they have me baffled. Thanks in advance. When I boot to a floppy, I can access the C: drive. switching to the Windows directory and running Win.ini yields the following Blue Screen: VFAT Device Initialization Failed A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable. For whatever reason (you may or may not know) you need to get to the BIOS and make sure the boot order is CD, then floppy, then hard drive, then PXE (or disable that one). Is this a Dell or an IBM by the way? What make and model? Those have their own idiosyncrasies.
