However, with that said, it’s not uncommon for the restoration process to fail and return a catastrophic error 0x8000ffff on the screen. In such a situation, you may also find that you are unable to access your system, so this error has very heavy ramifications. In most cases, you will receive the error 0x8000ffff message either when you are attempting to create a restore point or when in the process of restoring your system restore error system back to an earlier state. The precise error messages that you may receive are as follows: Catastrophic Failure (0x8000FFFF) Error 0x8000FFFF: Catastrophic failure An unspecified error occurred during System Restore (0x8000FFFF) What Causes Error 0x8000ffff There are so many contributing factors to this particular error, all of which lead to your systems inability to utilise restore points or boot up optimally. With that said, the most common causes are as follows: A corrupted application is adversely affecting files required by System Restore. Such a program could also cause the system to become unstable resulting in a catastrophic failure. System Restore files may have been deleted or corrupted. A Malware/Virus may have infiltrated your system and corrupted files required by System Restore to run. The volume shadow copy service (VSS) may have been disabled. System Restore requires this particular service to be running during the restoration process. How to Fix It There are a number of solutions that you can adopt to fix this problem in minutes to hours. With that said, it’s important to note that some of the methods mentioned below, require you to be at least an intermediate computer user. If you have basic computer skills with very little knowledge of the inner workings of your system, then I recommend you look at the automated solutions, provided below. Run As Administrator One really simple workaround for this problem i
get this:"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details:Access is denied. (0x80070005) You can try to run System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method. For more information, see What is Recovery?" There are two buttons underneath that which say "Run System Restore" and "Close." I tried to click "Run System Restore," but that gave me another error:"There was an unexpected error: Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF) Please close System Restore and try again." The one button underneath says "OK." I have tried this multiple times and nothing seems to work. I have turned System Restore off, and then on, but after creating a new restore point, the result is the same. I do not have any restore points that I need right now, so I am just looking to the future right now. At all costs I would like not to have to re-install Windows, I also have a third party backup program which I use, but I would like System Restore as well. Thank you in advance for any help which you can provide. jraju 2013-09-05 09:19:58 UTC #2 Stickman803 said: Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF) Try to run the system restore using Safe Mode. This you could get by pressing F8 while booting and then choose safe mode . There you go and do the system restore. Probably it will work Stickman803 2013-09-06 19:10:59 UTC #3 I just tried that, and it gave me the same error messages. Another problem has now arisen, the "C:\Windows\system32" folder is now coming up every time I start my computer, log in to it, or unlock it. Are these related? jraju 2013-09-12 02:01:16 UTC #4 When system restore stops responding, it is better you check your computer for file errrors by typing chkdsk /f/r. in the cmd elevated command prompt. It will fix any error in the file system on all drives. To get to the elevated command prompt, do this. Just click, Start and in the box, type cmd. You will get cmd icon. Just right click on it and choose Run as administrator. If this also fails , scan with boot scan available in avast. I recommend avast, because it only has those capabilities of destroying the trojans and generic viruses wh
