running Illustrator 10 on my mac, and VERY frequently when I'm trying to enable protected mode at startup adobe dc save an Illustrator file to the server I get a "file in use" error message. In order to get around this cannot save pdf file after editing I have to save the file with a different name, then outside of Illustrator, navigate to the file, delete the old one and rename the new file. We use the same workaround as you do, with the same frustrations. It always happens with files saved as .eps, and sometimes with .ai files. Julie M.
