I have a public IP that is NAT to the adapter and the only firewall in between is the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. I've created 2 rules, 1 to allow TCP 1723 and another to allow GRE but it still won't accept connections. What could the problem be? I can connect to the computer via RDP so it doesn't appear to be a TCP firewall issue and I can vpn connection error 800 windows 7 also telnet 1723 from another computer on the Internet. Also, I have a SBS 2003 server that accepts VPN connections on another public IP address (in the same block) and that works fine. I've tried disabling the Firewall service altogether in Windows 7 Pro, but that seems to block all incoming connections. The VPN server may be un-reachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection. You should doulbe check your firewall settings, pay attention to the profile step when you create the rule.(check all the options: domain, public and private) Another suggestion is to reset firewall to default, then add the rules for a test. VPN Error 800: The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the securityparameters required for IPsec negotiation might http://www.cryer.co.uk/brian/windows/troubleshooting/w2k_error_800_unable_to_establish_vpn_connection.htm not be configured properly. or for Windows XP the error is: Error Connecting to VPN Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable, or security parameters may not be configured http://www.earthvpn.com/faq-items/vpn-error-code-800/ properly for this connection. Where "VPN" is the DNS name of the server or the name of the VPN connection. Possible Causes and Remedies: Unfortunately Error 800 seems to be a general catch all error the remote and does not give any indication as to why it failed. The following list of things to check may therefore be incomplete: Double check the address of the server. Check that there is a valid network connection between your pc and the server. The simple way of doing this is to run ping at the command prompt: ping vpn-server Replace "vpn-server" with the address of the vpn server. Unfortunately an increasing number the remote connection of firewalls block ping, so a positive result indicates that you are taking to the vpn server, but a negative result does not necessarily mean there is no network connectivity. Check that port 1723 is open on the firewall. The easiest way be to use cryping, which allows a ping link connection to be made to the port: cryping -p 1723 vpn-server Replace "vpn-server" with the address of the vpn server. This will show a successful connection, indicating that port 1723 is open and something listening or that either the port is closed or that nothing is listening. If you get no response on port 1723 then either that port is being blocked by a firewall or there is no vpn server listening. You will need to establish which. Other things to try if the above does not help, but which I've no first hand experience of, include: Check that the firewall is forwarding IP Protocol 47 (GRE - not to be confused with IP port 47). However, if GRE is not forwarded then you would probably receive a different error. Ensure that the router (or firewall) protecting the VPN server support VPN connections. Check with the manufacturer's website to see if a firmware update is required. Its generally good practice to
to use an L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the security parameters required for IPsec negotiation might not be configured properly. Possible Cause: This error comes when the VPN tunnel type is ‘Automatic’ and the connection establishment fails for all the VPN tunnels. Possible Solutions: a> If you know which tunnel should actually be used for your deployment, try to set the ‘Type of VPN’ to that particular tunnel type on the VPN client side. This can be set by clicking the ‘Network Connections’ icon on the bottom right of the task bar, selecting your connection and right clicking the -> Properties -> Securities Tab -> under ‘Type of VPN’ select the relevant VPN tunnel type. By creating a VPN connection with a particular tunnel type, your connection will still fail but it will give a more tunnel specific error (for example: GRE blocked for PPTP, pre-shared key error for L2TP). b> This error usually occurs when the VPN server is not reachable or the tunnel establishment fails. i. Make sure the VPN server is reachable (try to ping the server). ii. If interested in PPTP, make sure PPTP port (TCP 1723) or GRE Port (47) is not blocked by your firewalls. iii. If using L2TP, make sure 1. Correct pre-shared keys are present in the client. 2. L2TP port (UDP 1701) is not blocked by your firewall. iv. If interested in IKEv2 based VPN tunnel, make sure IKE port (UDP port 500, UDP port 4500) is not blocked. v. If interested in SSTP based VPN Tunnel, make sure SSTP protocol port ( tcp 443 ) is not blocked.
