a minute: Sign up DOS start command not recognising script up vote 1 down vote favorite I've just recently started having this weird problem. I've a script which starts up a Jboss service in another window which uses the dos start command. The line is start "Jboss" /min server.bat The script had been working fine, but for some reason has stopped working the system cannot execute the specified program java at this line. If I open cmd window, cd to the directory where the script is, and run it manually I get the same error :- The system cannot execute the specified program The server.bat file is in the folder I'm running from. I've even tried creating a simple 'hello.bat' file which just echos out 'Hello' and even this doesn't work. My Path env setting is :- %SystemRoot%\system32\;%SystemRoot%\;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem\;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Microsoft Online Services;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Microsoft Online Services;C:\Oracle11gR2\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\bin;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files\TortoiseSVN\bin;c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\;c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\;c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\ This all used to work until today. I'm not aware of any Window updates, nor have I restarted my PC (until today to see that fixed the problem !) In this section the most common reasons for a C/C++ application failing to load are described with proposed steps to resolve the problems. One of the most common errors messages one may see when dependent Visual C++ DLLs cannot be found is a message box with a text saying “ The system cannot executed the specified program”. Below https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/nikolad/2005/06/09/how-to-debug-the-system-cannot-execute-the-specified-program-message/ several things are listed that may help to understand a reason for this error. Dependency walker can show most of dependencies for any particular application or Dll. If you see some of DLLs are missing, please insure that these DLLs are correctly installed on the computer on which you are trying to run your application. Manifest is used by the operating system loader to load assemblies that your applications depend on. It can be either embedded inside the binary as a resource or saved as an external file in the application's local folder. To check whether manifest is embedded inside the binary, open your binary in Visual Studio and browse through resources of this binary. You should be able to find a resource with name RT_MANIFEST. If you cannot find manifest embedded inside the binary, check for external file named something like

What do you think I changed? I would type the specified program something like "edit sometextfile.txt", and this very old-school editor would appear right there in the DOS window, accepting no input but text or Alt-commands. Well, I suppose I installed something or have two conflicting "edit"s or something like that cuz now, when I try to execute that command, I'm told "The system cannot execute the specified program." So, I'm forced to type "notepad sometextfile.txt", which, indeed is effective, but doesn't keep me in DOS, which is where I'd often like to stay. The reason this is a 500 pointer is because of the following: the easy answer is that in my zeal to install every resource kit offered by Microsoft or legit tools like those at joeware.net on this XP Pro laptop, perhaps, I installed another edit.exe or edit.dll, or created some conflict between the two via the environment variable, PATH, whose value is included here. As you can see from the JPEGs, I did a search, and found no such conflict. So, it must be something else! Thx. the value of PATH on this XP laptop, the system I'm asking about (the system I'd like to use the old-school edit command on): C:\Program Files\Windows Server 2003 SP2 32-bit Support Tools\;C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\;C:\ColdFusion8SearchService\k2\_nti40\bin;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program F
