Dim err As New CustomValidator err.ValidationGroup = "MyGroup" err.IsValid = False err.ErrorMessage = "The password is invalid" Page.Validators.Add(err) Unlike adding the CustomValidator to the markup, this method allows you to add any number of arbitrary error messages based on server-side business logic. Note that you can also add it to the page directly, but there are a couple of rules to follow: You must add the control to the same naming container as the controls of the validation group. If you don't want the validation message to appear in a random position in the page, you will either have to add the validator to a specific container or you will need to supress it using a CSS class or style. You can also create a custom class and implement IValidator, which enables you to add the message with one line of code, but this method doesn't support Validation Groups. Per Anders Fjeldstad's suggestion, here is a set of handy extension methods. Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic Imports System.Runtime.CompilerServices Public Module PageExtensions

Posted on July 4, 2014 by briancaos This trick is especially useful when you have custom code to be executed after your form have been submitted, and still wishes to communicate an error the https://briancaos.wordpress.com/2014/07/04/add-custom-text-to-aspvalidationsummary-c/ same way as you communicate form validation errors. Imagine the following ValidationSummary:
software Sometimes, there are problems encountered in a code-behind file that don't warrant the extra work and mark-up that would otherwise be required to add CustomValidator controls to the page for displaying error messages to the user through your ValidationSummary. Wouldn't it be nice if you could (somewhat) easily take care of it in your code-behind file alone, without adding additional clutter to your UserControl/Page/etc.? Well, you can! The following IValidator extension class can be added to a Page‘s Validators list with ease for displaying custom error messages. C# code: public class ValidationError : IValidator { private string _ErrorMessage; private bool _IsValid; public string ErrorMessage { get { return this._ErrorMessage; } set { this._ErrorMessage = value; } } public bool IsValid { get { return this._IsValid; } set { this._IsValid = value; } } public ValidationError(string message) { this.ErrorMessage = message; } public void Validate() { this.IsValid = false; } } In order to use the class in your code-behind, you just add a new instance of the ValidationError class to the Validators member of your container. C# code: Validators.Add(new ValidationError("There was a problem. Everybody freak out!")); Validate(); I suppose you could use this code to add the CustomValidator control anywhere you wanted to, but I generally add it to the Page‘s Validators collection and let my ValidationSummary control handle the error display. I've seen a few other examples of custom classes to accomplish this purpose, but each of them was missing some vital piece that prevented it from compiling out-of-the-box.
