The discussion includes a few links for this problem from Microsoft. Here is a hotfix for VS2005 and here is a workaround for VS2010. share|improve this answer answered Jul 13 '10 at 12:33 msergeant 4,14831422 21 The "remove and then add the project again" approach works for me. –adabyron Aug 8 '11 at 15:59 1 +1 I had to fix the dependency path manually in the .VDPROJ file. See my answer to possibly win some time. The hotfix didn't help at all. –Marc Sep 7 '11 at 14:01 161 Restarting VS10 worked for me - phew. :) –radbyx May 18 '12 at 12:08 9 +1 to radbyx. Your simple comment probably saved me an hour of frustration :) –JOpuckman Aug 20 '12 at 18:57 4 R

a comment TagsSetup Projects I have consistently used this method to get around this bug instead of rebuilding my https://littletalk.wordpress.com/2010/11/05/setup-project-error-unable-to-update-the-dependencies-of-the-project/ setup projects. This applies to both merge module projects AND setup http://www.ipreferjim.com/2013/01/unable-to-update-the-dependencies-of-the-project/ projects. Manually remove the data in the Hierarchy and Files section of the project files. 1. Open .VDPROJ file 2. Find the "Hierarchy" section. Delete everything so the section looks like this: "Hierarchy" { } 3. Find the "File" section. Delete unable to everything so the section looks like this: "File" { } 4. Reload the project 5. Rebuild the project. 6. You may need to re-add project outputs if missing something Like this:Like Loading... 2012 back to Visual Studio 2010 to do maintenance on another project. This project is currently stuck in Visual Studio 2010 until I have time to convert the old setup projects to WiX. I often receive the following error message during Release builds: "Unable to update the dependencies of the project" Closing Visual Studio 2010 and reopening seemed to have fixed the problem up until about a week ago. I've found that installing this hotfix seems to resolve the issue. The only problem is that I've had to install the hotfix multiple times. The 'cause' on the hotfix page says the issue is a result of how Visual Studio 2010 refreshes dependencies. I wonder if this is handled by Windows Updates updating the .NET Framework? Whatever it is, it's pretty annoying to have to apply this patch regularly. I guess it's just another reason for developers to move setup projects to WiX. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2286556 Related posts: Windows Installer Dilemma Visual Studio 2010: Logging in Learning WCF: IIS 7 won't start service from web project Visual Studio error, debugger can't start WiX Installer Update git push: fatal: unable to read SHA1 Oracle Exception: Could not load file or assembly ‘Oracle.DataAccess, Version=2.111.7.20… Fluent NHibernate error: Unable to cast object of type ‘Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleConnection' to type ‘System.Data.Common.DbConnection'.
