It's one of those wonderful hybrid graphics cards. I've spent a great amount of time trying to install the drivers for this graphics card properly. My primary reason to do this is to run gnome 3, which will not work properly when I install the fglrx driver from the additional drivers section of system settings. I know the desire to run gnome 3 might sound trivial, but I've made it my mission to get this to work. Is there a way to simply ignore the ati graphics and go with the intel graphics when using gnome? So, after reinstalling ubuntu using wubi, I immediately followed this guide. However, I ran into some blocks. When I ran the aticonfig command, I got a response PowerXpress error: Cannot stat '/usr/lib64/fglrx': No such file or directory I setup a symbolic link between /usr/lib and /usr/lib64. I do not know if that is correct, but it got my forward. When I rebooted the computer after calling aticonfig, I ended up hanging while booting on a black screen. It was like Checking Blah [ok] ..... Checking Battery State [ok] There were some fails, but the ones I could see were not important. So i go into tty1 and trying running the command fglrxinfo, but i receive the response: Error: u

No LiveCD I tried (Fedora 20, Mint) worked properly in graphics mode, so I suspected problem in built-in drivers and moved to linux with text-only installation (Arch), http://askubuntu.com/questions/94272/ati-driver-issue-fglrxinfo-returning-null-display-error-xorg-conf-file-looks-f so I could install drivers later. I've followed wiki manual and installed catalyst, removed open source driver, added nomodeset parametr to GRUB etc. but I'm still stucked, because Xorg won't start(black screen and errors presented in Logs). Tried googling, but learned nothing except Radeon proprietary drivers are comparable to suicide.Versions:Kernel: 3-10.40-1-lts (catalyst_build_module sucessful)Catalyst: 14.4-10Xorg: 1.14.5-11Logs&Configs:lsmodfglrx 8672295 0 amd_iommu_v2 7174 1 fglrx button 4765 1 fglrxfglrxinfoError: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=181948 unable to open display (null)Xorg.0.conf[ 2632.576] X.Org X Server 1.14.5 Release Date: 2013-12-12 [ 2632.594] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 [ 2632.600] Build Operating System: Linux 3.12.6-1-ARCH x86_64 [ 2632.606] Current Operating System: Linux localhost 3.10.40-1-lts #1 SMP Tue May 13 12:50:03 UTC 2014 x86_64 [ 2632.606] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-linux-lts root=UUID=4f60e723-44e9-4264-8d6c-ca62c43cf69c rw quiet nomodeset [ 2632.619] Build Date: 08 January 2014 01:35:51PM [ 2632.629] [ 2632.635] Current version of pixman: 0.32.4 [ 2632.646] Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. Since then, when I've tried to boot into #!, X won't start. According to dpkg.log, the following were included in the upgrade:xserver-common:all 2:1.12.4-3 https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2011/12/msg00018.html xserver-xorg-core:amd64 2:1.12.4-3 lsb-release:all 4.1+Debian8 flashplugin-nonfree:amd64 1:3.1 etc. (some libmpeg and libmplex files)Curiously, while I have Catalyst 12.8, fglrxinfo returnsError: unable to open display (null)According to Xorg.0.log, fglrx is version 8.98.2.apt-cache show xserver-xorg | grep Versions unable to returnsVersion 1:7.7+1Pinging google.com returnsping: unknown host http://www.google.comWhile I don't understand the problem, my hunch is that I need to rollback the updated xorg-* versions but a) I don't know how and b) no internet connection. In addition to the standard out-of-the-box Waldorf repos, I have deb-multimedia enabled.Fortunately, I have a very old back-up pc that I can write this on, otherwise I really would be up the creek without a paddle. Thanks unable to open in advance for any help anyone can give on this. The exact model, please. Is the driver installed via the repos or from AMD's site, or with smxi? Surely someone can bypass the password system like that, no? I'm going to set up a root passwd right now.
