When you type cinnamon, or gnome-shell, or gedit, or any other X app (a.k.a. X client), it tries to connect to an X server (started either by startx or a display manager). If it can't find one, it will fail. This is 100% expected. You need to either startx or use a display manager to use Cinnamon. I've never heard of a desktop environment that starts the X server for you, except for XFCE (with startxfce). share|improve this answer edited Oct 18 '13 at 20:52 answered O
with your Cinnamon settings or just suffered some kind of other error. If you then try to reset Cinnamon or to use any other command involving the desktop environment, you

will get the Unable to open X display error. While its hard to find could not open x display out what actually causes it, you can easily bypass it by purging and reinstalling Cinnamon - which is a painless process startx command not found and leaves your personal Cinnamon configuration untouched. To do so, log in with another desktop environment or open a command line environment by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1. Afterwards enter sudo apt-get purge cinnamon http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/96672/unable-to-open-x-display-when-launching-cinnamon && sudo apt-get install cinnamon Don't forget to log out and in again to make the changes effective. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to use it, due to errors. I searched through the forums for https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=46134 a bit, but wasn't able to find much that sounded like my problem. This thread was close though. Anyway, here's the situation:I boot up my computer, and after a bit, unable to it lands at the gdm3 login screen. I enter my username and password, and gdm3 looks like it's trying to launch gnome. The next screen that I see is black with an image of a monitor with a frowning face, plus this text "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out open x display and try again."I've tried logging out and trying again, but I don't experience any different results. I tried looking through the logs in /var/log/gdm3, but nothing jumps out. :0-greeter.log shows some errors about failed to load modules (pk-gtk-module and atk-bridge), but I don't know what those do. I then read about trying out various versions of `compiz --replace`, `metacity --replace`, and `gnome-shell --replace`, but they all fail. What's interesting is that they all fail in the same way saying "Windows manager error: Unable to open X display". My $DISPLAY envar was empty, so I tried setting it to 0, :0, :0.0, :1, :0.1, 0.1, but the error would then become "Window manager error: Unable to open X display :0" (or whatever display I set).I'm not sure where to look next. Does anyone have any ideas? Also, if you need more information, like files/configs/logs, let me know and I'll be happy to provide them -- I just don't know which ones will be useful. Thanks in advance for your help! Sting14 Posts: 27Joined: 2007-11-22 23:26 Top Re: GDM3: Window Manager erro
