There are many users who may mistakenly think they've put one name in their hosts file but put in a different name instead, especially since on many networks, computers are similarly named. This question (and answer) would show up when someone searches with that problem, and the answer would prompt them to check for such discrepancies, even though the exact misspelling would be different. –Eliah Kagan Aug 18 '12 at 11:09 5 make sure your hostname same with hosts. e.g. the hostname is ubuntu-pc and hosts is ubuntu-pc must be same. –Muhammad Sholihin Apr 1 '13 at 8:17 add a comment| 19 Answers 19 active oldest votes up vote 447 down vote accepted Two things to check (assuming your machine is called my-machine, you can change this as appropriate): That the /etc/hostname file contains just the name of the machine. That /etc/hosts has an entry for localhost. It should have something like: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 127.0.1.1 my-machine If either of these files aren't correct (since you can't sudo), you may have to reboot the machine into recovery mode and make the modifications, then reboot to your usual environment. share|improve this answer answered Se

One is: "The password you use to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your log in keyring." This is in a window that pops up on my desktop after I log in and I have to enter my old password to get in the rest of the way. I found this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1036564 link and followed the path given in post #2. There, in the list, I find an entry named "uname@host" which shows my new/ changed host name. When I double click it and expand the "password" section at the bottom of the window I find that the password is indeed my new password, not the old one (you can tick box to "show password"). The other is, and I think this is connected: When I use sudo in the terminal I get: "unable to resolve host" I went to: Code: cd /e

Search Why does my Deployment Client not phone home with error "unable to resolve my hostname."? 1 I have installed a universal forwarder on a Linux machine, and I configured it as a deployment client to phone a Splunk server at 192.168.1.28:8089. Unfortunately, it never does so. My deploymentclient.conf is [deployment-client] disabled = false [target-broker:deploymentServer] targetUri = 192.168.1.28:8089 And I checked on the Client side with:splunk display deploy-clientIt outputs Deployment Client is enabled. However, when I took a look at the splunkd.log, searching for DC(for Deployment Client), I saw lines: Creating a DeploymentClient instance unable to resolve my hostname. DeploymentClient is disabled. .... I think this is the problem, but I cannot solve it. I don't know where the "hostname" thing is, so I don't know how to modify it. Anyone please help me out! Cheers. universal-forwarder linux splunk-light hostname deployment-client Question by InkerzBrad Sep 28, 2015 at 05:07 PM 40 ● 1 ● 3 ● 6 Most Recent Activity: Commented by InkerzBrad 40 ● 1 ● 3 ● 6 People who like this Close 1 Comment 10 |10000 characters needed characters left muebel ♦ · Sep 28, 2015 at 05:31 PM A few things: Do you have any other clients that are able to checkin with the deployment server? Try setting the clientName = somedeployment.client.name setting in deploymentclient.conf I haven't seen this error before, but maybe check that the servername in etc/system/local/inputs and server.conf are resolvable InkerzBrad muebel ♦ · Sep 28, 2015 at 05:51 PM No this is the only Client, And it cannot check in with the server. I tried to assign a name to it but it does not work. I check both config file it does seems a bit weird. I update the question please shed some light on it.
