Exceeded retry count of 10. Failed. Error 42 Unable to copy file "obj\Debug\WeinGartner.WeinCad.exe" c# unable to copy file obj debug to "bin\Debug\WeinGartner.WeinCad.exe". The process cannot access the file 'bin\Debug\WeinGartner.WeinCad.exe' because it is being used by another process. Now I've figured out that killing the process Weingartner.WeinCad.vhost.exe works (sometimes ) but this is getting on my nerves. Any way to stop this happening at all? My debugger settings are visual-studio-2012 build process share|improve this question edited Aug 7 '13 at 12:16 asked Aug 7 '13 at 12:01 bradgonesurfing 12.1k862112 For me it was caused by manually launched .exe in the Release directory. The problem was that VS cannot copy over an executable that is still running. I'll try to fix it with properly cleaning up resources so the program does not leave hanging after window close button. –lahjaton_j Jan 8 at 8:24 add a comment| 45 Answers 45 active oldest votes 1 2 next up vote 179 down vote accepted I encountered the error message(s) in VS 2013. Mostly it occured when the debug proces was stopped somewhere in an exception. When clean+build has no effect, closing VS, deleting 'bin' and 'obj' folder

My problem is a little different. Whenever I create a new project and type some code, and compile it either debug or non-debug mode, it works fine. Now if I type some more code or change the current code, and try to run the program again, https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ed4d25c8-ffe9-4163-8c8a-053f62455673/unable-to-copy-file-objx86debugmyprogramexe-to-bindebugmyprogramexe?forum=Vsexpressinstall this error shows up. Unable to copy file "obj\x86\Debug\Sample.exe" to "bin\Debug\Sample.exe". The process cannot access the file 'bin\Debug\Sample.exe' because it is being used by another process. Even if I restart VS, this error shows up. I am forced to log out and log in again to get rid of this error. But if I change the code again, this error will show up. I tried doing a complete uinstall of VS and .NET 4.0 but still no luck. This also happens on Visual C# Express. I tried using the Task Manager but the program or process does not show there. Please help me. My last solution is to reformat my computer and do a clean installation but I really don't want that to happen. Please help. After waiting for around 10mins, and recompiling, it works fine again. But again, if I change the code and recompile, this error occurs. The process cannot access the file ‘binDebugfile.exe' because it is being used by another process" to you one fine day and leave you wondering how to get rid of it. It is actually Visual Studio itself that is keeping the file open, and a subsequent project build cannot overwrite it. Also, there is seemingly no cause. The error just happens, and then refuses to go away until you restart Visual Studio, which will cause the lock on the file to go away. The internet is full of fixes for this error, typically involving pre-build scripts that try to delete the locked .exe file so that the build process can finish, or using the task manager (or ProcessExplorer) to kill the Visual Studio debug hosting process. However, this is just fighting symptoms. There should be an actual point where this error starts to happen, and we should undo whatever we did then to make the error stop occurring. In my experience, there is in fact a cause. For me, the error started to occur after I had made a small change to my project's AssemblyInfo.cs: C# [assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.0.*")] 1 [assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.0.*")] This is because I wanted automatic version numbering. The original AssemblyInfo.cs will contain this line: C# [assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.0.0.0")] 1 [assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.0.0.0")] Now if you replace the last two digits of the assembly version with an asterisk, then Visual Studio will replace it with new values each time you build. The values it uses are actually based on the current date and time. This seems useful, since now
