Have you looked? –Nick Nieslanik Dec 14 '11 at 22:10 1 There is something going on with this. CSC creates pdb files. If the build completes successfully, they are left writable. But in some cases, probably build failures, they are left read-only. This causes future builds to fail b/c a read-only file exists at the target path. I think it's a bug of sorts because it renders the build process not ACID (because it's not isolated b/c it's not repeatable), but I can't narrow in on the problem further just yet. Extra lines of code would have to be added to the build to first clean up a possible previous failed run. –toddmo Feb 18 '13 at 19:32 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote Delete the obj folder! Posted on 2013-03-23 .NET Programming C# Visual Basic.NET 3 Verified Solutions 4 Comments 3,155 Views Last Modified: 2013-04-15 I made the mistake of opening the same WPF project at the same time with two instances of Visual Studio. Running the project produced the following error. unexpected error creating (FFIMP is my project name.) Error 1 Unexpected error creating debug information file 'C:\...\FFIMP.PDB' -- 'C:\..\FFIMP.pdb: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. It's no surprise I generated this error. The two instances of VS were fighting each other. Ever since, however, I continue to see this error despite the fact that I'm careful to open one instance of Visual Studio at a time. It's not a huge deal. I simply close Visual Studio, re-open it, and the error goes away. I'd like to, however, get rid of the error permanently. Most of the Asp.Net (VS) developers might have faced and will be facing a problem in building the solution in Visual Studio with an error saying "Unexpected error creating debug information file at XXXXX.The process cannot access the file \bin\Debug\filename.pdb because it is being used by another process." This means that the respective .pdb or .dll file is being used by some process. And in-order to build the solution the file must be either deleted in file system or the process which is associated must be killed. The system won't allow to delete the file from file system anyways, the other option is to kill the respective process. But finding the respective process is not straight. Here we have a nice tool "Process Explorer" to identify the process for which the file is being usedusing search in the tool and respective process can be killed as well. Isn't it so useful and nice tool.
