Iis Error 2740
Contents |
Microsoft’s descriptive errors is 0x8ffe2740 when trying to start an FTP or Web Server from the IIS Administration module. The error itself means that there is a port conflict with another service. This is a relatively easy diagnosis, unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 ftp as you should already know what ports your ftp or web servers use. Use the
Unexpected Error Occurred
netstat command in the command console to find out what program is using a particular TCP port. Replace the ## with the unexpected error -50 mac port you wish to test. This works on Windows Server 2003 and 2008. netstat -anop TCP|find ":##" The above command will return a PID (process ID). You will need to match that to a running program or dep0001 unexpected error service. Type the following command: tasklist /SVC /FI "PID eq ####" Here is an example using port 21. In this example you can see the "ftpsvc" service is using port 21 through svchost.exe - which is normal. In a client's machine, it was MSUpdate2.exe that was using port 21 - a piece of malware using an FTP server to serve pirated movies! If not, what OS and version are you running? You can also use Process Explorer to find what service the svchost process with that PID is using. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653 November 12th, 2011 Reply fouad Tks its was usefull for me to check the port witch is in use. code for quite awhile and haven't had the need to open any ASP.NET projects, but this morning had to trouble shoot one. Visual Studio complained it couldn't open the URL. I went to the IIS snap-in and noted that the default web site was stopped. When I'd try to start it, I'd instantly get "Unexpected Error 0x8ffe2740 Occurred". OK. Well. Googling around for this, it's universally said that this error is IIS's way of saying, "some other process is using port 80 and I can't get at it". (Aside: then why in the name of all http://www.ithacks.com/2010/04/21/unexpected-error-0x8ffe2740-when-starting-ftp-or-iis/ that's holy doesn't it simply SAY that? Nevermind). The solution is to find the offending process or app and either get rid of it, or get it to use another port. Skype is an often-mentioned culprit; it's default configuration uses port 80 if available. But I don't use Skype, and have never had it installed. Microsoft's KB article on this issue recommends installing something like TCPView to figure out http://bobondevelopment.com/2007/10/17/unexpected-error-0x8ffe2740-occurred-in-iis-51/ what's using what ports, so I installed TCPView but it revealed nothing using port 80. Sometimes a process like SvcHost will host other processes within itself, which TCPView can't see. So it just became a game: shut down app after app, try to restart IIS after each shutdown, no joy. Then I started shutting things down in my system tray. Finally, I found the culprit: JungleDisk, an open source program that maps a Windows drive letter to an Amazon S3 storage bucket. I use it for online backups. When I get a breather I'll submit this to JungleDisk, but thought this might help someone else in the meantime. { 2 comments… read them below or add one } darryl March 9, 2008 at 4:02 pm Thanks for the post! I had the same problem and went through the same routine, not finding anything using port 80. I tried to think what I had installed recently, and on a whim, closed Jungle Disk. It worked, and then I re-Googled the problem to find your post. Nice to find verification. Balboos February 28, 2012 at 11:47 am Had the same problem and used your sense of the cause. It just means IIS can't start a website because port 80 is already in use.
MS KB article 816944 has more info. A likely suspect is Skype, since https://weblogs.asp.net/jongalloway/425693 it will use port 80 if it's free. This is a tricky one, since IIS might work fine most of the time since it starts up before Skype, butif you stop and restart IISSkype sees port 80 is free and snakes it. 08ffe2740 for you! IIS-Resourceshas theanswer but not enough Google Juice. Here's the fix: SkypeFile-> Options -> ConnectionUncheck Use Port 80 as unexpected error an alternative for incoming connections.Restart default website. 118 Comments Thanks, this one brought the light to my momentary darkness... Only that I had to quit Skype in order to bring my website back to life. Also, in my version of Skype the Connection is reached this way: Tools->Options->Connection Great!
