Iis Unexpected Error 8ffe2740
Microsoft’s descriptive errors is 0x8ffe2740 when trying to start an FTP or Web Server from the IIS Administration module. The error itself means that there is a port conflict with another service. This unexpected error occurred is a relatively easy diagnosis, as you should already know what ports your unexpected error -50 mac ftp or web servers use. Use the netstat command in the command console to find out what program is using a dep0001 unexpected error particular TCP port. Replace the ## with the port you wish to test. This works on Windows Server 2003 and 2008. netstat -anop TCP|find ":##" The above command will return a PID (process tcpview ID). You will need to match that to a running program or service. Type the following command: tasklist /SVC /FI "PID eq ####" Here is an example using port 21. In this example you can see the "ftpsvc" service is using port 21 through svchost.exe - which is normal. In a client's machine, it was MSUpdate2.exe that was using port 21 - a piece of malware using an FTP server to serve pirated movies! You can also use Process Explorer to find what service the svchost process with that PID is using. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653 November 12th, 2011 Reply fouad Tks its was usefull for me to check the port witch is in use. You deleted "Default Web Site" from IIS?!?! | Home | Scrolling an ASP.NET ListBox to right where you want it to be >> A convenient way to deal with "Unexpected Error 0x8ffe2740" Comments (100) | Share Ever had the annoying problem of IIS not wanting to start, coughing upthe message"Unexpected Error 0x8ffe2740 Occurred."? The reason is that some other application has grabbed port 80. The most common applications doing this are Skype or Trillion. You can try just ending task on them and see if IIS will then start. If you're not running either of those then what could it be? Microsoft's KB article about the subject describes using the third-party utilities TCPView or FPort. But I think an easier way to find the issue is to simply drop out to a command prompt and run: netstat -aon Scroll up to the top part with TCP listings and you'll see something like this: Then under "Local Address" look for 0.0.0.0:80. This is your entry, and a the far right is the PID you're after.
code for quite awhile and haven't had the need to open any ASP.NET projects, but this morning had to trouble shoot one. Visual Studio complained it couldn't open the URL. I went to the http://bobondevelopment.com/2007/10/17/unexpected-error-0x8ffe2740-occurred-in-iis-51/ IIS snap-in and noted that the default web site was stopped. When I'd try to http://christianpayne.com.au/2006/09/10/unexpected-error-0x8ffe2740/ start it, I'd instantly get "Unexpected Error 0x8ffe2740 Occurred". OK. Well. Googling around for this, it's universally said that this error is IIS's way of saying, "some other process is using port 80 and I can't get at it". (Aside: then why in the name of all that's holy doesn't it simply SAY that? Nevermind). The solution is to find the unexpected error offending process or app and either get rid of it, or get it to use another port. Skype is an often-mentioned culprit; it's default configuration uses port 80 if available. But I don't use Skype, and have never had it installed. Microsoft's KB article on this issue recommends installing something like TCPView to figure out what's using what ports, so I installed TCPView but it revealed nothing using port 80. Sometimes a process like SvcHost iis unexpected error will host other processes within itself, which TCPView can't see. So it just became a game: shut down app after app, try to restart IIS after each shutdown, no joy. Then I started shutting things down in my system tray. Finally, I found the culprit: JungleDisk, an open source program that maps a Windows drive letter to an Amazon S3 storage bucket. I use it for online backups. When I get a breather I'll submit this to JungleDisk, but thought this might help someone else in the meantime. { 2 comments… read them below or add one } darryl March 9, 2008 at 4:02 pm Thanks for the post! I had the same problem and went through the same routine, not finding anything using port 80. I tried to think what I had installed recently, and on a whim, closed Jungle Disk. It worked, and then I re-Googled the problem to find your post. Nice to find verification. Balboos February 28, 2012 at 11:47 am Had the same problem and used your sense of the cause. In my case, the solution was to shut down my Vertrigo Apache server. This makes some sense as I must shut down inetinfo.exe in order to get it to start (on this particular XP machine, at least). Fortunately, I only cured this out of curiosity as I prefer

"unexpected error 0x8ffe2740" Hmm?? Weird! A bit of google love took me here. WTF? What the hell is running on port 80? I love this bit from Microsoft: CAUSE This behavior may occur if a port conflict exists on the system. By default, IIS uses port 80 for HTTP communication. If an application other than IIS is running and is using port 80 on the same IP address, you may receive the error message when you try to use IIS Manager to start the Web site. Halfway down they suggests using TCPView. Snazzy! I'll have to remember that one! So it looks like Skype has my port 80! This is getting weirder! I stopped Skype, restarted IIS, restarted Skype - all sorted! Share this:FacebookEmailTwitterPrintReddit 1 Comment Evgueny July 18, 2009 Thanks - it helped me also!
