want to upgrade to Alpha Five version 4.5 since we have new computers and new database requirements. But we are putting it off until we overcome the ODBC problems. Our new database requirements need the use of another software package which uses ODBC to communicate with the database tables. Our first effort was to establish ODBC communication between MicroSoft Access and

this new software package. It was successful. We know that the new software package does function properly. But our files are in Alpha Four version 3 or Alpha Five version 1 formats. Our problem is that none of the Microsoft ODBC drivers work with the Alpha Four/Five datafiles. We have tried several methods. MicroSoft Access was used to open an Alpha file directly. It failed with an error 8961. MicroSoft Access and ODBC manager was used to open an Alpha file. It also failed with an error 8961. And of course, the new software package, which only knows ODBC, failed with the same error when trying to hook-up with the Alpha files. In the ODBC manager, we tried dBase IV and V. Neither of them worked. This mountain seems to be getting higher. Would appreciate any suggestions. If that's the case, then here are a few things you can check. Are you using ODBC for the import process? If so make sure you have the ODBC settings across machines set properly. If you aren't using ODBC, then you should check the version of the driver you are specifying in your DAO connect string. There may be a version compatibility issue between your machines. If the app is running in a networked environment then this may be a security rights issue. Make sure that the user has proper access rights to the directory containing your database.
