Follow the steps in this article. Alsoattempt to restore while connected with a itunes unknown error occurred (-54) known-good 30-pin Dock Connector cable, computer, and network to isolate this issue to the device. The MAC address being missing or the IMEI being the default value (00 499901 064000 0) can also confirm a hardware issue. I tried and I tried to fix it over the last 6 months.this is how I got around it today.I used a short cable (about 15cms) to connect my phone to my Imac. I removed excess usb devices. Hi, Fantastic site. I am trying to fix an iphone 3, that was given to me not working. It only shows the apple sign when i plugged into the computer. It changes logo in dfu mode, itunes recognizes that it needs restoring , but during the installation i get error 1611. Apple support site suggests that this might be a hardware problem, https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/53209/iPhone3+will+not+restore,+error+1611 but no further clues there. One Apple Discussions user provided a possible http://appletoolbox.com/2011/03/how-to-fix-itunes-error-1013-or-1611-while-ios-restore/ solution for those having these error issues:For Mac OS X:Step 1. Go to your “Applications” folder Step 2. Go to your “Utilities” folder Step 3. Launch “Terminal” Step 4. Type “sudo nano /etc/hosts” (without quotes) and hit return Step 5. Enter your password Step 6. Use the down arrow key to find the “gs.apple.com” entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering unknown error “#” (no quotes) in front of the text or remove the line that has gs.apple.com entirely Step 7. Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O on the keyboard Step 8. Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X on the keyboard Step 9. Restore your iDevice For WindowsStep 1. Start –> Programs –> Accessories Step 2. Run Notepad or WordPad Step 3. Click “Open..” from File menu. Step 4. Browse to unknown error occurred Windows/System32/drivers/etc Step 5.
