(but thanks for suggestion) I am now able to save if I take certain elements out of the file but they are simple solid-non transparent colours. I can't understand why Illustrator doesn't ike it, when, just for exapmle, I add a new background shape. If I take the shape out again, I can save ok. I have uninstalled and re-installed illustrator, and all was well for five minutes and then the problem came back.
