Solved Backup Assist errors caused by VSS failures Posted on 2009-10-01 MS Server Apps MS Legacy OS Storage Software 1 Verified Solution 8 Comments 1,840 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-07 We have Backup Assist 4 installed on a Server vss error 2003 SBS machine, and is appears to be failing on the file backup every night with the following error: "BA954 Volume Shadow Copy Error 0x800423f4 - writer error: non retryable" I worked with Backup Assist support, and they seem to think this is a Microsoft issue. They had me verify that the VSS service is running with an admin account, which it is. Anything else we can try? Thanks! 0 Question backupassist vss error by:Rob806 Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google Best Solution byRob806 Thanks TCB1, but I did see that, and tried everything they suggested. None of their instructions have worked. If this ShadowCopy works (test coping the windows folder) then I would think the service is working properly and the problem is with Backup Assist? 0 Message Author Comment by:Rob8062009-10-01 Thank you for your responce, TCB1... I installed and ran Shadow Copy, and I received an error when trying to run it: "Could not initialize Windows Volume Shadow Service (VSS). CodeL ERROR 8000FFFF. Make sure VSSVC is running in your task manager. Click help for more information." I did check the task manager, as instructed, and VSSVC.EXE is indeed running. Can I safely assume now that VSS is having issues, or is there something else I can test? Thanks again! 0 LVL 10 Overall: Level 10 Storage Software 4 MS Legacy OS 2 Message Expert Comment by:TCB12009-10-01 On occasion I've had a similar error when runing shadowcopy. It was usually fixed with reboot. However, I remember playing around with the service properties
