From that, one place to start is looking at the credentials you configure for the anonymous user. If they are incorrect (if perhaps the user password was changed elsewhere) you will get an HTTP 401. share|improve this answer edited Aug 22 '11 at 13:34 answered Oct 28 '08 at 2:20 David Hall 23k85996 +1 for saving me hours more work; +more if I could. –Patrick Cuff Feb 27 '09 at 19:13 post not found =( –Niklas Aug 22 '11 at 12:13 @Niklas updated the link - will put more info from that post in my answer soon to futureproof it too –David Hall Aug 22 '11 at 13:35 add a comment| up vote 2 down vote Make sure your directory permissions are also set to allow everyone read access. A lot of times doing local dev work I will forgot that the directory being accessed has a seperate set of permissions that need to be altered. Oct 21, 2008 05:31 AM|ygor|LINK I have googled and seen a few posts on this issue but cannot find an answer to it, I think it is because the Service Path is set to a Web Service defined in web service access another project i.e. ServicePath="http://Server1/ajaxWebServices/Service.asmx" so howcan this be achieved if I need to access an external service?
