My client is .NET 2 running on IIS6 When I run the both client and serivce on 401 unauthorized error web service my local host it works. When I move the service to the web server I get the above error. I have set Allow An I have tried every combination of anonymous access & integrated Windows authentication within IIS I can access the web service via a brower and call it using Web Service Studio ok, it just does not work when I call from another .NET service UPDATE I have checked that the IUSR account has NTFS file permissions and is also added in local security policy as a USER that can access the server over network. When I call from WebService Studio it makes two request first called gets back 401, then it calls again passing 'Authorization' and works. See below. So for some reason my anonymous access is not working. As when I only have anonymous access ticked and integrated Windows authentication unticked I cannot even access it from the brower Content-Type: text/xml; charset=utf-8 SOAPAction: "http://tempuri.org/HelloWorld" Host: webdev1 Content-Length: 314 Expect: 100-continue Connection: Keep-Alive

platform and distributed applications IIS returns 401 for all ASMX requests with Windows Integrated Authentication ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ APGC DSI TeamAugust 14, https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/asiatech/2009/08/14/iis-returns-401-for-all-asmx-requests-with-windows-integrated-authentication/ 20090 Share 0 0 This problem was first found on a SPS server, and then reproduced with simple ASP.Net application. The initial symptom for this problem is SPS has problem with scrambling. SPS log shows 401 errors for ASMX page which provide scrambling function. Later, we confirmed that all ASMX pages have the same web service issue. To isolate the problem, we opened the ASMX page in IE; IE was keeping popup for authentication. And, IE gaves a 401 unauthorized error after 3 times trying. Then, we enabled security audit for failed logon events. However, security log shows all the related accounts were 401 unauthorized web logon successfully. One crazing finding is we could see 200 successfully logged in IIS log after 401, however at client side, IE keep popup authentication window. We followed the loop-back direction as all the calls were local. It doesn’t help as well. Then, we created a simple TXT file under the same folder where ASMX page located, it works fine. Simple ASPX page works as well. At this moment, we were suspecting that the ASMX page is calling other pages, and these pages returned 401. Unfortunately, this is not true. Later, we found the HttpHandlers section in web.config was totally wrong. Follow is a sample for the wrong configuration. Usually, the highlighted “remove” item should be the first line for the section. However, it is the last line now. Under this setting, the handler for ASMP was removed.
