How to resolve ADFS issues with Event ID 364 Casper Manes on August 28, 2014 (2 votes, http://www.gfi.com/blog/how-to-resolve-adfs-issues-with-event-id-364/ average: 4.50 out of 5) 2 comments Active Directory Federation Services, or ADFS to its https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-troubleshoot-common-http-error-codes friends, is a great way to provide both Identity Provider and Identity Consumer functions in your environment. With it, companies can provide single sign-on capabilities to their users and their customers using claims-based access control to implement federated identity. It is based on the emerging, industry-supported Web Services Architecture, which is defined in WS-* specifications. One common error that comes up when what is using ADFS is logged by Windows as an Event ID 364-Encounterd error during federation passive request. There are three common causes for this particular error. If you encounter this error, see if one of these solutions fixes things for you. Time skew Cause ADFS proxies are typically not domain-joined, are located in the DMZ, and are frequently deployed as virtual machines. All of that means that the ADFS proxies may have unreliable or drifting clocks and since encountered error proxy they cannot synchronize to a domain controller, their clocks will fall out of sync with the ADFS servers, resulting in failed authentication and Event ID 364. Symptoms ADFS proxies system time is more than five minutes off from domain time. Authentication requests through the ADFS proxies fail, with Event ID 364 logged. Authentication requests through the ADFS servers succeed. Resolution Configure the ADFS proxies to use a reliable time source. One way is to sync them with pool.ntp.org, if they are able to get out to the Internet using SNTP. Open an administrative cmd prompt and run this command. w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:pool.ntp.org /syncfromflags:manual /update If you have an internal time source such as a router or domain controller that the ADFS proxies can access, you should use that instead. If your ADFS proxies are virtual machines, they will sync their “hardware clock” from the VM host. Make sure it is synching to a reliable time source too. Certificate Revocation Check Failing Cause ADFS proxies need to validate the SSL certificate installed on the ADFS servers that is being used to secure the connection between them. Symptoms If an ADFS proxy cannot validate the certificate when it attempts to establish an HTTPS session with the ADFS server, authentication requests will fail and the ADFS proxy will log an Event 364. Authentication requests to the ADFS servers will succeed. Resolution En

Learn more → 10 How To Troubleshoot Common HTTP Error Codes Posted Oct 24, 2014 80k views FAQ Apache Nginx Introduction When accessing a web server or application, every HTTP request that is received by a server is responded to with an HTTP status code. HTTP status codes are three-digit codes, and are grouped into five different classes. The class of a status code can be quickly identified by its first digit: 1xx: Informational 2xx: Success 3xx: Redirection 4xx: Client Error 5xx: Server Error This guide focuses on identifying and troubleshooting the most commonly encountered HTTP error codes, i.e. 4xx and 5xx status codes, from a system administrator's perspective. There are many situations that could cause a web server to respond to a request with a particular error code--we will cover common potential causes and solutions. Client and Server Error Overview Client errors, or HTTP status codes from 400 to 499, are the result of HTTP requests sent by a user client (i.e. a web browser or other HTTP client). Even though these types of errors are client-related, it is often useful to know which error code a user is encountering to determine if the potential issue can be fixed by server configuration. Server errors, or HTTP status codes from 500 to 599, are returned by a web server when it is aware that an error has occurred or is otherwise not able to process the request. General Troubleshooting Tips When using a web browser to test a web server, refresh the browser after making server changes Check server logs for more details about how the server is handling the requests. For example, web servers such as Ap
