> Solution 16449 Solution 16449: Correcting the "WINDOW RANGE" Error When Graphing Using a TI-83 Family, TI-84 Plus Family, and TI-Nspire™ Handheld in TI-84 Plus Mode. Type Question and default window settings for ti-84 Answer Last Updated 10-MAR-2011 08:27:16 How do I correct the WINDOW RANGE error when graphing using a TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, and TI-Nspire handheld in TI-84 Plus mode? If the WINDOW RANGE error is returned when graphing using a TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, and TI-Nspire handeld in TI-84 Plus mode, this means the values for the WINDOW settings need ti-84 window settings to be adjusted. To correct the WINDOW RANGE error, the default WINDOW values will need to be restored using the ZStandard (ZoomStandard) command (see steps below):• Press the [ZOOM] key.• Scroll down to 6:ZStandard and press [ENTER].The default settings for the WINDOWvalues are: Please see the TI-83 family and TI-84 Plus family guidebooks for additional information.TI-Nspire handheld in TI-84 Plus mode users may refer to the TI-84 Plus famly guidebook.

Think of your calculator view screen as a small magnifying glass that lets you see a PART of the entire graph. Notice that the calculator viewing window at the left shows only a small 3x3 grid section of the entire parabola. http://mathbits.com/MathBits/TISection/General/WindowSettings.htm The graph paper view shows a larger portion of the parabola graph. Also notice that the calculator view shows a somewhat "wider" looking parabola. The window's aspect ratio (affecting the actual x and y scales) is 3:2 (not 1:1). The http://brownmath.com/swt/ti83_ts.htm normal window is a rectangle, not a square. You need to understand how the viewing window is set up and how to control its size. The WINDOW key allows you to control the viewing window. The default window (also window range obtained with ZOOM #6 ZStandard) is the 10 x 10 window shown at the left. Xmin = minimum value displayed on the x-axis Xmax = maximum value displayed on the x-axis Xscl = distance between the tick marks on the x-axis Ymin = minimum value displayed on the y-axis Ymax = maximum value displayed on the y-axis Yscl = distance between the tick marks on the y-axis Xres = pixel resolution. Xres = 1 means that functions how to fix are evaluated and graphed at every pixel on the x-axis. Xmin must be less than Xmax Ymin must be less than Ymax Setting set Xscl =0 and Yscl = 0 will turn the tick marks off. To change window settings on the WINDOW screen: -- use your up or down arrows to move to the item to be changed -- enter the new value (which clears the original value) -- arrow down or hit ENTER. Format Settings (2nd ZOOM) ... sets cursor coordinates to rectangular or polar coordinates ... sets coordinates display on or off ... sets grid on or off (GridOn shows dotted background screen) ... sets axes on or off ... sets axes label on or off (labels axes, but not ON the axes) ... sets expression display on or off What is the physical layout of the TI-83+/84+ view screen in terms of pixels? Pixels are the small cells that light up when you graph. If you turn your screen very dark (hit 2nd up arrow repeatedly) you will see the actual pixels in the screen display. The default viewing window is set up in a 3:2 aspect ratio. The window is NOT a square. Because of these set pixels, the "nicest" viewing windows have Xmin and Xmax values that differ by a multiple of 47. Finding Your Way Around TABLE of CONTENTS
automatically for your screen or printer. Underlined text, printed URLs, and the table of contents become live links on screen; and you can use your browser's commands to change the size of the text or search for key words. If you print, I suggest black-and-white, two-sided printing. Summary: Some common problems on the TI-83 or TI-84 calculator look intimidating because the messages are strange, but they're easy to fix. This page helps you with the TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. My screen is covered with horizontal or verticallines. My screen is completely dark, every pixel filledin. There are no tick marks on mygraph. An extra line or curve appears onmygraph. I can't graph more than one equation at a time. My normal distribution from ShadeNormlookswrong. Other Troubles My screen is too light or too dark. Where's the correlation coefficient? What's New Seealso: Texas Instruments pages on the TI-83 and TI-84 family (accessed 2014-06-13). Error Messages General advice: Most messages give you a choice of Quit and Goto. If it's available, always pick Goto: the TI-83/84 will show you the exact spot where it found something wrong. That's usually enough of a clue that you can figure out what's wrong. "Syntax" Press [2] for Goto and recheck your equation on the Y= screen. Make sure you pressed the [X,T,θ,n] key for x and not the [×] times key. Also, make sure you distinguished between the minus key [−] and the change sign key [(-)]: the change sign key makes a shorter minus sign than the minus key. "Window Range" Press [1] for Quit and then press [WINDOW]. Make sure your Xmax is greater than Xmin and Ymax is greater than Ymin. "Dim Mismatch" Are you doing a scatterplot? Press [Y=] and check that only one of Plot1, Plot2, Plot3 is highlighted. Then press [2nd] [STATPLOT] followed by the number of the active plot. ([STATPLOT] is the shifted [Y=] key.) Check which list numbers are mentioned. Press [STAT] [ENTER] and make sure tha
