Since downloading a virus detection program in July, I had been unable to update my https://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=84646 MS Windows, perform Security Updates, or Upload Windows Defender updates. Program was uninstalled, but problem remained. Several attempts to resolve installation failures were unsuccessful (via MS Tech Help) -- until now, of course. 2. Error code for all Installation Failures: 0x80246008 3. Troubleshooting section at the MS website led me to discover the problem via:Start > Run > Type in: services.mscRight Click on Background Intelligent Transfer ServiceClick on PropertiesService Status = STOPPEDCould not click on START4. When I tried to click on START in the BITS properties, I received this error message: "Could not start the BAckground Intelligent Transfer Service service on locl computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found." The resolution to this problem came from tech help (MS Windows website) -- I'll quote from the tech's email (below). Please note - the first suggested step worked for me immediately. ---------------------------------------------------------- *From MS Windows Tech Help: From your description, I understand that the computer failed to install updates with the error code 0x80246008 and when starting the BITS, the error 126 occurred. If there has been any misunderstanding, please let me know. I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you. As far as I can tell this is a BITS problem. The are unable to get updates from the windows update site as well. The computers are XP SP2. When I attempt to start the BITS service, I get this error: "Could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service windows 10 on Local Computer. Error 1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service." Event log shows this: Event Type: Error Event Source: DCOM Event Category: None Event ID: 10005 Date: 7/20/2005 Time: 9:04:29 AM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: xxxxxxx Description: DCOM got error "The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service. updates failing (0x80246008) Discussion in 'Software' started by phattcat, Dec 19, 2006. phattcat Private E-2 hi there. i have a problem with windows updates. getting error code 0x80246008 when i try to use update. i also get an error when sorting BITS as i have read this needs to be correct. "1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK. 2. Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service. 3. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then click Apply. 4. Click the Log On tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in every hardware profile that is listed. If the service is disabled in one or more hardware profiles, click the hardware profile, click Enable, and then click Apply. 5. Click the General tab, and then click Start." When i click start i get the error message saying - services Quote: windows could not start the background intelligent transfer service on local computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code - 2147024891. any help will be greatfully recieved. Another last resort option is to deleted the Downloader folder in this location C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\downloader ( but backup the downloader folder first as its not guarenteed to work in all instances ) Your not having any Malware issues at present are you, I noticed you had some cleaned up earlier in the month but your not experiencing any now?
