We currently have 4 http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/cannot-add-windows-7-pc-to-domain-get-the/f6b8bc13-18b6-4a67-afa5-755d98a51776 Windows XP machines running on that domain without any issues, but when I try to add the Windows 7 computer, here is what happens: A computer account on the domain could not be found (confirmed it is already there) I put in the computer name and domain again, and Administrator credentialsNow it https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/68a3f2d0-8811-4748-9470-568149193b0a/cannot-join-windows-7-to-domain-even-after-setting-dns-to-domain-controller-ip?forum=w7itpronetworking tells me: "An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed." I currently have DNS on the Windows 7 PC set to the Domain Controller and have IPv6 unchecked under Network Properties. I can even ping the domain name (resolves to IP of the domain controller). It looks like it can, indeed, find the domain from the message in step 1, so am I missing something here? Thanks in advance for any help! Then, let’s create the following registry value for a try: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManWorkstation\Parameters - Created a DWORD DomainCompatibilityMode = 1 - Created a DWORD DNSNameResolutionRequired = 0 Reboot the machine and check the result again.Alex Zhao TechNet Community Support

You should be able to ping the server name, the domain name, or the FQDN and get a reply for all three. Here's what I get: Server Name - Win2k3-ent Domain Name - test.contoso.com Code: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Join Domain – Windows 7 or 2008 Server Written on December 23rd 2010 at 16:51. Last modified: November 15, 2011 DNS Issue Causes Problem Joining A Domain in Windows 2007 and Windows 2008 Server The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "your-domain-name" An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help. Solution This error is being caused because the primary domain controller is not specified as the first DNS server in your TCP/IP settings on the system that you're trying to join to the domain. Even if your domain controller is not your DNS server, temporarily set the IP address of the domain controller as your first DNS server, join the domain and then change your DNS Server settings back to the way they were before. Full instructions below. Windows 7 or 2008 Server Instructions Click Start In the Search Programs and files field type View Network Connections and hit Enter When your Network Connections appear, right click on your active connection > click Properties Double-click Internet Protocol Version (TCP/IPv4) Update the Preferred DNS Server field with the IP address of your primary domain controller > Click OK > OK again Now try to join your domain again. Optionally, after successfully joining your domain you can change your DNS servers back.
