Windows 2008 Server Core edition is published without GUI, so some applications may not compatible with Windows 2008 Server Core. For example, Windows 2008 Server Core can be installed in Windows 2008 Server Core through a community method, but it’s not support by Microsoft officially. In addition, you are welcome to share the method for how to extract and register manually the VB6.0 in Windows 2008 Server Core. only takes a minute: Sign up Installing VB6 runtime on Server 2008 x64 up vote 3 down vote favorite 2 I have moved all my users from windows 7 machines to Windows Server 2008 remote desktop. All of the apps https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/9b0f8911-07f4-420f-9e48-d31915f91528/msvbvm60dll-missing-in-core?forum=winservercore they use currently were developed in vb6 (new apps are being developed in c#.Net currently) and need to be used for the time being... The apps seems to run fine in Windows 7. I just can't get them to play nice with server 2008. I did try to run dependency walker and found it was missing "msvbvm60.dll". Tracked that down to the actual VB6 runtime. Tried to find a download for VB6 runtime for server 2008 x64 and that was http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19036918/installing-vb6-runtime-on-server-2008-x64 a no go. So I just tried to put the "msvbvm60.dll" file inside c:\windows\system32\ and c:\windows\SysWOW64. It said there was already a file named "msvbvm60.dll" in the SysWow64 folder. So my question is, why would it not work? It seems windows 2008 already has the runtime on the machine. But depends says that "msvbvm60.dll" is missing... :/ Ideas? c# windows dll vb6 share|improve this question asked Sep 26 '13 at 19:24 Arvo Bowen 1,14111431 Interesting... we have 50+ users in server 2008 running a VB6 ActiveX DLL... no issues other than, well the code is a mess! –Mat's Mug Sep 26 '13 at 22:51 @retailcoder more then likly they included the depends in the install file. –Arvo Bowen Sep 27 '13 at 2:52 Doesn't server 2008 have win7 under the hood? It has to be something's missing in your installer... I think. –Mat's Mug Sep 27 '13 at 14:04 All very valid statements but as it stands, when I run the same installer on any Windows 7 machine the application works perfectly fine. Furthermore I have to point out again the reason the application will not run after installing on Server 2008. The file missing is "msvbvm60.dll", a standard vb6 runtime... This is not a special file I need to include in my application this is a file all vb6 apps are built on. ;) –Arvo Bowen Sep 28 '13

Description: The Visual Basic 6 SP6 runtime library, also called vb6 runtime files or vbrun dll set, are required to run programs that were written in Visual Basic 6. It can be difficult to know whether a program needs these files because often an author fails to mention it in the help files or documentation. Typically the way you find out is that you run the program and an error message appears 'A required .DLL file was not found', 'Runtime error' (caution, this error has lots of different causes) or 'Error: the file msvbvm60.dll could not be found.' Another catch is that there are 6 major versions of Visual Basic, each with their own runtime library set (6 sets in total). Plus to make life really difficult, Visual Basic also has service pack releases. Fortunately, these are backward compatible but still can be a pain. The current set is Service Pack 6 (SP6) released in late March 2004 and it will run files written with VB 6 SP1 to SP6 . PC Mechanic - Fix your PC's Windows registry errors. This package includes msvbvm60.dll, oleaut32.dll, olepro32.dll and others. After you have downloaded the file, simply run it and the files will be copied to their correct location.
