If not, you may want to go ahead and reinstall. The error is a Windows error and is not a hard drive problem. When you do decide to put a new hard drive in the computer you will be able to reinstall Windows with no problems. Posted by kctobyjoe on 8 Dec 2008 7:24 NO need to do a reinstall reformat DELL would have you believe you newed a nuckear bomb where a flyswatter is only necessary run the chkdsk/f utility preferably from a copy of WINPE disc or some other suchutility disc USUALLY that area of the drive needs a REPAIR. I have done it but forget exactly WHAT I did. This is one of the FEW areas that I prefer VISTA; it automates a repair for you and usually does a good job! good luck kc Like 0 Reply You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. If your HDD is more than three years old, you might consider a replacement. Run "chkdsk /p" or "chkdsk /f". If you see a lot of errors or bad sectors, it's time to go shopping. Otherwise, let chkdsk fix the problems and go on your merry way. Good luck! Report Mohd. Quran- Jul 22, 2009 02:45AM thank very much...the link to MYFIXes it worked . Report Anonymous- Sep 4, 2009 09:56AM The problem being discussed is extremely common and working as a technician I see it almost weekly. Thank gos there is someone with sense on here (Sephiroth). The fix posted by this user will work as its the same fix I use everytime. It's on the first page of replies about 2/3rds of the way down, containing a link Any yeah how would the HDD be damaged by light as im assuming no-one is taking the drive out, then taking it apart, and even if it was that it wouldn't just corrupt the odd reg entry! I have a 3.2GHz Dell Dimension 9150 with Windows XP Media Center Edition. Ok, so my computer crashed on restart and when i turned it back on I received a black screen with the following: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \windows\system32\config\system You can attempt to repair this file be starting windows setup using original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. I do not have the original XP Media Center Edition CD but instead have borrowed a friends XP Professional CD. I have tried booting from my cd rom by altering the BIOS order but after booting from the CD and proceeding to the blue screen with "windows setup" on display, it automatically gets to work without asking any questions. It loads files for about five minutes then I get: *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF748E0BF, 0xF78DA208, 0xF78D9F08) *** pci.sys - Address 0xF748E0BF base at F7487000 DateStamp 3b7d855c I have tried this 4 times now to no avail. Other forums have suggested I use microsoft support on the issue but its says don't do it if my computer has a OEM-installed operating system which it does. I have tried the F8 menu and tried booting is safe mode and from last known good configuration and both just take me back to the original error message. Any help would be great.
