After reading the Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide (you can print this when you first start Boot Camp Assistant in OS X) I discovered that I made a big boo-boo.When Windows XP asked me which file system format I would like for my Windows C: partition I made the mistake in choosing "Leave the current file system intact (no changes)." The Setup guide says that you must not select that option.Instead you must select one of the other options, I personally selected "Format the partition using the FAT file system" since my Windows drive is under 32GBs. After that I had no problems.I don't know if you made the same mistake I made, but since I received the same error message I figured this might help.Good luck! I've reformatted the machine with OSX 10.5 on a Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Here's how far I get: - Use boot camp to partition the drive, it windows xp pro then says to insert the cd, and I can press a button after the partitioning is done to restart and install. - after the restart occurs, the windows setup begins, and I install, there is a C drive (fat) and an option to install on this drive and leave it as is (or I can format as NTFS at this step), so I install on C as it is - after the install is done the computer restarts, immediately after the restart though I get a 'Disk error' message is DOS at the top left of my screen, directly after 'Press any key to boot from CD.." After first getting this error I tried installing windows again using a quick NTFS format, but got the same error w/ an addtional message about some missing dll afterwards, so I tried booting into OSX after this and restored the drive w/ boot camp, then tried again, but got the same error once again.. An idea what I can do to resolve this issue? Update Here's the error that I get when I format the drive as NTFS, instead of the 'Disk error': Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll Please re-install a copy of the above file. windows osx windows-xp macbook boot-camp share|imp
10.6: How to install Win XP Pro Service Pack 3 in Boot Camp 3 Nov 02, '09 07:30:03AM • Contributed by: robg Over the weekend, in preparation for an upcoming review of the newest versions of Fusion and VirtualBox, I needed to set up a new Boot Camp partition on my MacBook Pro. Because Windows 7 isn't yet officially supported by Apple, and Vista isn't widely used, I chose to install XP Pro. My XP Pro disc is a Service Pack 2 release, so after booting into Windows, the system found and downloaded a bunch of updates to apply, chief among them Service Pack 3 (SP3). The update process went smoothly, until the system tried to install SP3. The update process started, then died with this error: An error occured while copying file osloader.ntd. Cannot copy file to destination directory. Click Retry to retry the operation or click Cancel. At that point, the only solution was to bail on the update, and have Windows back out the changes it had already made. I tried a few times, but always got stuck at the same point. After a fair bit of digging and hair pulling, I found this Apple Support document that describes the problem, its cause, and (most importantly) the solution. You can read the details in the support doc, but in case that ever vanishes, here's a quick recap. The problem is caused by Windows' insistence on writing the SP3 update to the first partition it sees. Because Boot Camp 3 mounts your Mac OS disk as a read-only disk in Windows, this is the first partition the system sees, and the SP3 install fails. To get around this problem, you need to first back out of the SP3 installer (which involves a series of clicking various No, OK, and Cancel buttons). Once out of the installer, you need to rename a file buried inside the Windows system files. On your Boot Camp partition, navigate into Windows » System 32 » drivers. Here you'll find a file named AppleMNT (it's a .sys file). Rename it to AppleMNT_keep, then restart Windows. After the restart, verify that your Mac OS partition no longer shows in the My Computer window, then install SP3. When it's done and you've restarted, rename the AppleMNT_keep file to AppleMNT, and restart again to regain read-only access to your Mac OS partition. I'm glad to report this worked as described, and SP3 is now installed and running on my MacBook Pro. • Currently 2.74 / 5 You rated: 4 / 5 (27 votes cast) [21,195 views] Hint Options Printable Hint Format Subscribe to 'macosxhints.com install tips' 10.6: How to install Win XP Pro Service Pack 3 in Boot Camp 3 | 5 comments | Create
