running Windows XP Pro 64. I've looked at the Microsoft "help," but it's pretty useless. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make these dcom windows vista errors go away? They're all pretty much the same. A screen capture is attached. I tried shutting down the DCOM service, but then my computer wouldn't boot in normal mode, so I put it back. Any suggestions would be appreciated. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-update/fixing-a-dcom-problem-identified-in-event-viewer/31b17bcb-ea56-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5 Thanks. To assign permissions Using Regedit, navigate to the following registry https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-dcom-errors.885604/ value HKCR\Clsid\clsid value\localserver32 The clsid value is the information displayed in the message. In the right pane, double-click Default. The Edit String dialog box is displayed. Leave this dialog box open. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Component Services. In the Component Services snap-in, expand Computers, expand My Computer, and double-click DCOM Config. In the right pane, locate the program by using its friendly name. Right-click the program name, and then select Properties. On the Security tab, in the Launch and Activation Permissions group box, select Customize, and then click Edit. Add the user to the permissions list, and give the user the appropriate permissions. Click to expand... I get to step 6, but I cannot find it's "friendly name" (what is that?), or anything resembling what it might be. Some help on this would really be appreciated. Thanks. pcpro17, Dec 14, 2009 #3 Saga Lout Joined: Sep 15, 2004 Messages: 3,791 Is the failure of DCOM to start giving you a problem or is it simply something you happened upon in Event Viewer? I ask only because I frequently see the message in Event Viewers in many XP systems whewre it doesn't actually cause a problem. It may just be that it tries to start before other critical Services and continues to try until it gets its own way, leaving an error message behind it. Saga Lout, Dec 15, 2009 #4
been thrust onto centre stage again... What is DCOM in Windows XP? DCOM is a a very little used technology that has been built into the Windows operating system so as to allow the http://www.updatexp.com/dcom-windows-xp.html various software components to inter-operate across any network... (Great for worms and viruses...) However, as with many services and protocols in Windows, Microsoft appears to have enabled it as "always running" - when it's almost never needed! Some Windows applications https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24309750/how-to-fix-dcom-in-windows-xp-sp3.html such as Paintbrush & Media Player are "DCOM ready". They have been created that way so anyone else on your network, or over the public Internet can access them. But Why...? DCOM in Windows XP has always been a windows xp bad idea! It is a potential source for trouble. The world now has multiple "DCOM worms" using the Internet to find new victims. You might be asking is it safe to disable then? Well the short answer is YES. The slightly longer answer is that whilst most home users are not going to need the DCOM protocol in Windows XP... Some business/corporate users might need it. You see some specially written software for businesses may be written to actually windows xp dcom use the DCOM functionality. The only real way to know is ask your IT department or disable the service and see if the software stops working as it should! In reality though, most of you reading this article will be home users, or users of a stand alone business PC that is not running any special software that requires DCOM in Windows XP. This is the official Microsoft description of DCOM: "The Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) is a protocol that enables software components to communicate directly over a network in a reliable, secure, and efficient manner. Previously called "Network OLE," DCOM is designed for use across multiple network transports, including Internet protocols such as HTTP. DCOM is based on the Open Software Foundation's DCE-RPC spec and will work with both Java applets and ActiveX® components through its use of the Component Object Model (COM)." If I Do Not Need DCOM - Why Is It There? Good question! And my rather cynical answer is so Microsoft can say they have a distributed component system built into Windows, rather than put a competitors system in Windows! You see DCOM is a new name for the old OLE. OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) was a bad idea that Microsoft tried to make happen... Now they call it DCOM... Virtually no-one needs it, wants it or uses it! Shocked? You should be... What's worse is that Microsoft have DCOM
