It could be that a machine had its IP# changed but the WINS database kept listing it by the old IP#, so when the workstation booted up and contacted WINS it saw what "appeared" to be another machine at a different IP# using the same name (hence a "duplicate name"). Clear out the bad entry (delete not "tombstone") and that should correct it. In worst case clear the entire WINS database and let it rebuild itself. It wil

To correct this behavior you could prevent both network cards wins manager from connecting at the same time, although that is not a viable tactic to us. What we have decided to do is disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the wireless card.  If you are doing this remotely you can run the following commands. First you will need to know what the index number of a duplicate name your network card is, you can retrieve that with the following command. wmic nicconfig get caption,index,TcpipNetbiosOptions View of the network cards and the index numbers You can see the index number listed next to each network card name, in this case we are looking for the wireless card, that would be index number ‘2'. You can also see the TcpipNetbiosOptions column is showing a ‘0', that means it is set to DHCP server options or fail over to enabled if DHCP has no options set. we will need the TcpipNetbiosOptions value to be ‘2' to disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and with the index number we can run the following. Event InformationCAUSE:There are several possible reasons why this error message may be generated: 1) There is a computer on the network with the same name. 2) Identical user name logged on to multiple computers. 3) Inactive or duplicate names in the WINS database. 4) Corruption in the DHCP database. 5) Conflicting network adapters in a multihomed computer. 6) “ipconfig/all” returns incorrect host name. RESOLUTION:1) If the IP address is all zeros, have the customer look to see if there are any Windows for Workgroups computers on the network with the same name. Windows for Workgroups computers will sometimes return all zeros for their IP address with this error. 2) The user names will register with a <03h> and that will be the name in conflict.
