The E79 error code indicates that your Xbox 360 has either a corrupted file system or a hard drive problem. Seeing as you have checked the HDD and confirmed it is functional, I'm thinking it might be a software/NAND chip based problem. Two questions; Have you installed any system updates recently? And is E79, the only error code that is showing up? Two possible solutions that I have found, in regards to software are; Clearing any failed system updates that could have caused the error: To do this, simply press and hold the sync up button, when the console is switched off (on the 360 S, it is the button, next to the USB ports). Then, turn on then console while holding that button. Continue holding it until the console has completely booted up and the dashboard appears. The console would've automatically cleared any failed system updates during the boot process. Or, if you can get to the dashboard (try doing so without the HDD) try re installing the System Update (if you have recently done one) that possibly might have caused this: To do this, go into System Settings > Memory > then hit in this order: Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X > Yes. If this doesn't fix it, I'll have a larger dig aroun

Really, How To Fix An Xbox 360 E71, E79 Error Started by shiroDX , Jun 25 2009 06:44 PM Please log in to reply 9 replies to this topic #1 shiroDX shiroDX X-S Enthusiast Members 4 posts Posted 25 June 2009 - 06:44 PM Now I know there a few posts out there dealing with 360 E71 and E79 errors. Even less with actually ways how to fix it. Some are even trying to charge you for a book on how to fix it. Well I’m going to provide you with the actual solution (At least what worked for me) on how to resolve this error. All with out opening your 360 or having to deal with Microsoft. Please bear with me as this will get a little winded but I think it’s important you know all the details leading up to me FINALLY (I hope) getting this resolved.I have a first gen\year 360 with a Sammy M25 drive (Flashed with iXtream v1.51). Over the three years that I’ve owned it, never has it ever RROD’ed until now. The first time it happened I was trying to play a copy of Red Faction: Guerrilla. As the game started to load, it froze a bit like it was trying to do some type of update. Then when the title screen tried to load up, the colours looked a bit off and the game just hung. Strange, so I rebooted it and then to my horror a black screen with white text came up saying that there was an E79 error. After some checking up on line I found out that it was most likely caused by a dashboard error, xam.xex could not start, file system corruption OR problem with the hard drive. One of the so called solutions was to power off the 360 and hold down the sync up button (The small white one) and press the power button to turn on the console. The sync up button must stay held down until the console boots up completely. This is to clear and failed updates. Well after 10min of hold it down it wasn’t booting up at all. I powered it off and back on, RROD.I couldn’t believe it! More on line searching. Tried booting it up with out the hard drive attached, still RROD (Three red lights). Found out that I could clear all installed game updates and console cache (Does not effect game saves) by going to system, Select "memory", Press Y on the HD symbol Press X,X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,XA message will appear saying: "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?"Select YesBut I can’t even get into dashboard it just keeps RRODing. At this point all I kept finding were posts tha
