Windows XP.I tried downloadig a driver from the HP website but found that I could not always print from MS Word and when I could, there was an error message about "PCL XL error: WArning: IllegalMediaSource"I am now back to square one - wondering what driver to install. I do not even know whether I should be downloading a PCL 5 or PCL 6 driver.Any advice anyone? Thanks in advance for your time.Peter Respond to this 0 The driver is built into the xp system. Just go to add printer and follow the prompts. You should only download the drivers when you have an issue with the drivers which are built into the os. by dmzcompute on Nov 15, 2005 at 10:03am Add comment Please sign in to comment DMZComputeThanks for the reply. I have tried manually installing (c.f. plug and play) using the Windows XP driver for the HP LJ 2100 (not the PCL 6 one) - but no joy. Now it will not even print the test page?Should I try the PCL 6 driver?Isn't there a specific driver for the 2100 TN and it's extra tray?Bamboozled!!Thanks for any further advice.Peter - Peter Barrett 0 If it does not print the test page after the plug and play installation you may have other issue besides the driver. Lets do a test. Do a dos print job to check the communication between the printer and the computer. Go to start run and then type command and hit enter. Now at the prompt, type cd\\windows and hit enter. Next type dir >> lpt1 and hit enter. The printer should now print a copy of the directory. If it does we are ready for step 2. If it does not you need to check the cable you are using if parallel or network connections if using the eio card. Step 2. Delete all printer icons for the 2100 and go to add printer. Go thru the steps and when you get to the choice of printer use the HP III driver just for testing purposes. If the printer works with this driver we are ready for step 3. If it does not print correctly you may have an issue with you windows printing system. Prehaps another printer loaded in interferring with the loading of this printer. You will need a software expert for it. Step 3. Go to the printer driver and click on it with the right mouse button and go to properties. Then go to advanced and choose new driver. Now choose either the pcl5 or pcl6 driver for the printer. The driver for this printer is the same whether the tn or plain model. The way you tell the computer you have the extra tray is to go to device settings and under installable options add the extra tray. The N in the model stands for network which means it originall
