is a pop up window with a 16 bit MS-Dos subsystem error... C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe config.net. The system file http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/16-bit-ms-dos-subsystem-error.2826667/ is not suitable for running MS-Dos and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose "close' to terminate the application. This error does not pop up when you log in as an https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20370945/16-bit-MS-DOS-Subsystem-error.html administrator. This error will happen at any desktop on our network that a user tries to log onto. I have searched quite a bit and I really havent found 16 bit anything useful. I have already tried to replace the files that were possibly corrupt and that did not solve the problem. Anyone have any other suggestions? , Jan 26, 2007 #1 Advertisements Wesley Vogel Guest cmd.exe has nothing to do with 16 bit MS-DOS subsystem. cmd.exe has nothing to do with config.nt. You have some sort of 16 bit ms malware. A trojan/virus/worm. UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan. UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full system scan with each one. You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware software. Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware allowing for easier removal. When I try starting an .exe-file from cmd.exe on WinXP, this message pops up: "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe - [filename] An application has attempted to directly access the hard disk, which cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly." I've found several answers on the internet on how to fix this on Win95/98. But what about XP? Does anyone know? A. When you attempt to run a 16-bit application under NT, you might receive the following message: Application popup: 16 bit Windows Subsystem : An application has attempted to directly access the hard disk, which cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. This error is typically the result of an invalid entry in the command.com, autoexec.
