That question can be seen here. http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_21866946.html In that instance I was getting two error messages. The first was taken care of as a result of https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21867713/16-Bit-subsystem-unstable.html that question but I am still having trouble with the instalation of the software. When I get to six percent instalation it stops and just sits there unresponsive. When I click on it it gives the (not responding) notice in the menu bar. Once I try to close it I get a message as follows. "The request to end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. The Win 16 subsystem may be unstable. Press OK to terminate the Win 16 subsystem or cancel to keep it running" Whether I choose OK or Cancel...the program closes. I understand that the most common cause of this problem is the config.nt file or the autoexec.nt file being corrupted or missing. I have followed these directions several times...as well as the the connected directions with this question. http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Q_21118739.html?query=WIN+16+Subsystem&clearTAFilter=true I have replaced those files using the method of creating a new nt file and also tried cutting and pasting from a working XP Pro ope

Solved: Running old 16-bit programs in Win XP-SP3 Discussion in 'Windows XP' started by DKTaber, Nov 13, https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-running-old-16-bit-programs-in-win-xp-sp3.768961/ 2008. She has played the game with no problems until recently. The computer's OS was a mess, so I destroyed the C: partition, reinstalled Win XP and updated it to SP-3, reloaded 16 bit all the programs and restored her backed-up working files. The computer now runs like a screamin' mini, with no OS problems -- save one. Mr. Potato Head, a Win 95 (16-bit) program, no longer runs. Can't even run setup.exe to install it. After ending that attempt and removing the CD, Task Manager still shows setup.exe and wowexec.exe running. When I 'end task', I get "The request to end the selected 16 16 bit ms bit task has timed out. Win 16 bit subsystems may be unstable. . . " After seeing that, I tried to lead my friend through the Program Compatibility Wizard, but it still doesn't run. I'm not sure she's responding correctly to the questions it asks, but I think she is. I know that more recent versions of Win XP have some problems with legacy programs. . . but she CAN run the program on her Vista laptop, no problem. If this old program with run under Vista, why won't it run under XP? What do I need to do to make it run? DKTaber, Nov 13, 2008 #1 Sponsor BryanW Joined: Nov 12, 2008 Messages: 81 I had this problem awhile ago and avast turned out to be the problem. No chance avast is installed is it? EDIT: just did a search on it and it seems that that issue was fixed awhile ago so I don't think this would be your problem. srry! Sometimes at close down I get a message saying "the Win 16 subsystem may be unstable". Iain Main Windows XP is a 32-bit operating system and runs 16-bit programs via a bit of a bodge known as Windows NT Virtual DOS Machine support (NTVDM). Microsoft's Knowledge Base suggests checking that this has all the required files: see Cannot Install Program Using Its Setup Utility (search for Q222975). You can then make sure the WOW (16-bit Windows on Windows) subsystem starts correctly by following article Q153544. However, 16-bit Windows programs will not work at all when we move to 64-bit Windows (and 32-bit programs are run using WOW), so it's time to start replacing them. You can identify 16-bit programs by right-clicking the exe file and selecting Properties: they don't have a Version tab. Sadly, some 32-bit programs have 16-bit installers....
