Prices for the coin, which have a face value of about 33 20p coin cents US, have shot up with auction bidding reaching as high as several hundred dollars. (See current eBay auctions.) According to reports, the Mint issued tens of thousands "year-less" 20p coins toward the end of 2008. "The Royal Mint can confirm that a small number of new design 20 pence coins have been incorrectly struck using 20 pence coin the obverse from the previous design, resulting in these coins having no date, " a Royal Mint spokesperson was quoted on BBC News. "The issue has now been resolved and the Royal Mint would like to reassure members of the public that these coins are legal tender." The British Royal Mint last year launched several circulating coins with new reverse designs featuring the Shield of the Royal Arms. It was the first new design in 40 years. During the design process, the year of issue for the 20p was moved from the reverse side to the obverse ("heads side") which features Queen Elizabeth II. However, some of the new coins were struck using the old die obverse, resulting in the missing dates. for The Mail on Sunday Updated: 12:30 EST, 11 July 2009 View comments Check the change in your pocket or purse carefully - you could reap rich rewards. A batch of up to 100,000 20p pieces were shipped from the Royal Mint earlier this year without the 2009 date stamp. Bidders on eBay have been offering up to £240 for one of the coins while some sellers have been asking as much as £5,000. Christopher Hill, a director of coin auctioneer Dix Noonan Webb in Mayfair, central London, says: 'It is still not known exactly how many 20p pieces without a date there are in circulation, but their value will only rise over time. We recently sold one for £100. These coins could be worth holding on to as they might fetch a few hundred pounds each in a few years.' The dateless 20p piece is known in the trade as a 'mule' - a coin with mismatched sides. This latest mistake at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant near Cardiff happened when the date was moved from the 'tails' to the 'heads' side but the first batch accidentally kept the old heads. The last time an undated coin entered circulation was in 1672 during the reign of King Charles II, but this was deliberate. 'Mules' are rare and such anomalies make them highly sought-after among coin collectors. The previous mules arose when a batch of 2p coins were minted with the words 'New Pence' instead of 'Two Pence' in 1983. Christopher says: 'These coins are worth far more than they were when made in 1983 and we can sell them for between £500 and £700, depending on their condition.' Another interesting coin is the 1933 penny. Because enough pennies were in circulation, only seven of these coins were produced that year and many were buried under the foundations of churches and other buildings laid that year. Christopher says: 'These penny coins can fetch as much as £50,000 - but be wary as there are far more forgeries than the real thing.' The most valuable British coin is the gold Double Leopard minted during the reign of Edward III in 1344. Only three are known to exist and one sold in 2006 for £460,000. But this
