Posted on 2011-12-19 MS Excel 2 Verified Solutions 6 Comments 11,941 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-12 Hi, When I am trying to open Ms.Excel File from server shared folder, I am getting error message https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325573 " DDE Error has occurred....." , attach snap short of full message ( message appears with Excel2003 & Excel 2010). When same folder or file copied to Desktop and open we don't get " DDE Error....." message. Please note the path \ location of file on server ( file which is giving DDE error) - Snap short attach. I do this to myself, sometimes, too :) So, you can open other files (likely with shorter filenames, right?) in the same location. I'd be willing to bet if you shortened THIS filename as a test, to something like a.xls, you'd be able to open it. Try that and let us know. If you try to open a file with http://www.wipfli.com/BlogPost_MCRM_blog_04_05_12.aspx a URL that is too long, you get the following error message: The URL for this file is too long for the application. A temporary copy of this file will be opened on your computer. You must save this copy as a new file. Today, we came across a similar error message a dde and discovered there is a limitation for Excel files of 218 characters – this is the path length limitation whether it's a URL or a file share path. If you try to open an Excel file with more than 218 characters in the path and filename, you receive the following error: A DDE error has occurred, and a description of the error cannot be displayed because it a dde error is too long. If the filename or path is long, try renaming the file or copying it to a different folder. The Microsoft article for this issue is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271513. The solution is to shorten the file path or URL by storing files at the top level (rather than "nesting" files under several folder levels).
