I found your error, and the solution on MS Technet. Problems After Enabling Active Desktop if that does not work try Err Msg: Internet Explorer cannot find the Active Desktop... I also notice that this seems to be an IE4 problem. Have you considered upgrading to IE5, IE5.5 or IE6? RandyG, Feb 6, 2002 #2 jb420 Thread Starter Joined: Feb 6, 2002 Messages: 19 it active desktop html tells me to rename the mshtml.dll file but everytime i try it tells me that the file is in use what is using the file? jb420, Feb 6, 2002 #3 RandyG Joined: Jun 26, 2000 Messages: 7,762 It is literally the Microsoft HTML library file. If you can't rename it because it is in use, then reboot your system into Safe mode. During the boot sequence, before you see the Windows splash screen, hit the F8 key repeatedly, about 2-3 times per second, until you get the Boot options appear on the screen, select Safe mode. Once in Safe mode, try following those directions. I've published the htm file to a local IIS site and verified that all users can read it. I've set the following GPO settings; User Configuration/Policies/Administrative Templates/Desktop/Desktop Enable Active Desktop Enabled No Disable Active Desktop Enabled No Prohibit changes Enabled No Desktop Wallpaper Enabled No http://server11:8081/students.htm Stretch Prohibit adding items Enabled No Prohibit closing items Enabled No Prohibit deleting items Enabled No Prohibit editing items Enabled No Disable all items Enabled No Add/Delete items Not configured No Allow only bitmapped wallpaper Not configured No
Yet, when a user logs on they get a error stating, "Internet Explorer cannot find the Active Desktop HTML file. This file is needed for your Active Desktop. To turn off Active Desktop, click OK" - with 'OK' being the only option. I've been going in circles with this for the past few days and not getting very far. Are there any words of spicy wisdom on this problem? I'm using IE8, Roaming Profiles, Rediected AppData (All which seem to be working fine as of themselves).
