The errors say "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2.". At the same time, event id 11 disk transfer rates to the hdd in question became very slow. I ran chkdsk /f /r - no issues reported. I also ran the SeaTools

for Windows tool - no SMART errors, short tests show also no issues. Currently running the check from EASUS Partition Manager - so far everything green, however, at the same time, the errors in the even viewer keep showing up (while https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/154690 EASUS is running surface check and reporting everything as green...) Any ideas, what the problem could be? Thx. More about : atapi errors Best solution John_VanKirk a c 106 G Storage 29 July 2011 00:57:51 Hi there, Couple things to check: Double click on the Event Viewer error (is this a red exclamation point error?) and it will bring up a an event properties box. That has an online help link which may give you more specific information about the error. Also, could http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/271734-32-atapi-errors there be another HDD or Device on this IDePort2 that is not being checked, since you mention transfer rates from another device. Check the BIOS to see what is on Port 2. A very good testing program is HD Tune (free edition) or HD Tune Pro, which gives you Disk Health Info, S.M.A.R.T. parameters, and you can test the file data transfer rates across the disk. Here's the link www.hdtune.com And if there is any concern about the controller chip on the MB, rather than the HDD itself, consider downloading the latest chipset drivers from the MB website. Share xxx666yyy777 1 August 2011 10:00:28 Thanks - HDTune did indeed help me solve the problem. It reported a warning related to a SMART factor that could indicate a bad cable. I checked the MB and the cable in question was indeed loose. After resetting it, no more atapi problems! Its a shame that neither the Seagate nor WD tools reported that issue and showed the SMART status always as green... Opened 6 years ago Last modified 5 years ago Event ID 9: did not respond within the timeout period Reported by: ToddAndMargo Owned by: Priority: critical Component: other Version: VirtualBox 3.0.12 Keywords: Cc: Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux Description host: centos 5.5 x64, 32 https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/8478 GB memory guest: windows server 2003, sp2, r2 32 bit, 4 GB memory VM: VB 3.2.12 Hi All, Sorry for coming directly to you guys with this, but since I can not purchase support from https://forums.techguy.org/threads/hard-disk-problem.290373/ you guys, I have no other choice. And, this is a real emergency. I have got to get this fixed or my goose is cooked (as in fired). I am in trouble here. I atapi error just got a Fox Pro database corruption. The SATA controller was giving me Event: 9 iaStor error out the nose, so I switched our controller from an "IATA89ENU v8.9.0.1023" (SATA) controller to a "Intel 82371AB/EB 5.2.3790.3959" (IDE/ATAPI) controller. It stopped the iaStor errors. But now I get the same Event:9 ATAPI errors. I HAVE TO STOP THESE ERRORS! Log files will follow shortly. Not a *flood* like the guest running M$SQL Server 2008, but here and there: Event Type: Error Event Source: iaStor Event Category: None Event ID: 9 Date: 1/3/2011 Time: 1:54:23 PM User: N/A Computer: VB-WINXP Description: The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period. Also: a work around to help you guys troubleshoot this issue: Turn the Virtual Machine's hard drive cache off. Device Manager --> Disk drives --> VBOX HARDDRIVE --> Policies (tab) --> uncheck “Enable write caching on the disk” This stopped the iaStor and ATAPI Event 9 errors. You guys now have something to fix. -T comment:2 Changed 5 years ago by frank Any chance

Advertisement indiie Thread Starter Joined: Jul 1, 2003 Messages: 15 I've got to return my computer to place of purchase for the 4th time due to a problem not being fixed. They give it back each time saying it's fixed but when I get home or after a few days it still occurs. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or can point me to any other tools/utilities that might be of assistance to me seeing as the shop can't seem to find a problem. Symptoms of latest problem: Computer speed bogs down: - Screen will freeze for around 30 seconds every 30 seconds - Simple start menu selections will take 30 seconds + to display. - Check Disk runs very slow - over night. - System Restore runs very slow - over night etc. Hanging on Intel motherboard startup screen during startup "Unknown Hard Disk error - Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart" Each time, the shop said they have tested all hardware and it all tests OK. Seeing as I had returned it twice already they said they replaced the hard drive *anyway* last time but probs still occurring. They acknowledge the bogged down speed during some operations. My error events during the bogged down period includes a few dozen of: Disk - The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D. and atapi - The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort3, did not respond within the timeout period. I have also had a few BSOD. Two were KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR 0x0000007A atapi.sys and a 0x000000F4 All the research and error explanations that I have come across for my current symptoms seem to relate to Virtual memory problems and/or hard disk problems. I have used the Mircosoft RAM testing utility and the extended RAM tests results are fine. I have also used the Seagate disk diagnostics and it shows the disk tests OK. Are there any trustworthy CPU testing tools available free on the web? The above problems only occur periodically. Eg. The bogged down thing started happening after computer was on for about 30 mins this morning. Then restarted and now working OK. Often, when system keeps hanging or giving me errors, the only way to get it to start correctly is if I unplug the harddrive from the motherboard and plug it into the other slot available for another hard drive. The seagate site explains that there are no drivers as such for my harddrive so I don't know if this is effectively reinstalling the disk which gets the system starting again. I have installed all the latest BIOS and driver updates for my motherboard and hardware.
