viewer. The errors say "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2.". At the same time, transfer rates to the hdd atapi incompatible error in question became very slow. I ran chkdsk /f /r - no issues reported. I also ran the SeaTools for Windows tool - no SMART errors, short tests show also no issues. Currently running

the check from EASUS Partition Manager - so far everything green, however, at the same time, the errors in the even viewer keep showing up (while EASUS is running surface check and reporting everything as green...) Any ideas, what the problem could be? Thx. More about : atapi errors Best solution John_VanKirk a c 106 G Storage 29 July 2011 00:57:51 Hi there, Couple things to check: Double click on atapi error in event viewer the Event Viewer error (is this a red exclamation point error?) and it will bring up a an event properties box. That has an online help link which may give you more specific information about the error. Also, could there be another HDD or Device on this IDePort2 that is not being checked, since you mention transfer rates from another device. Check the BIOS to see what is on Port 2. A very good testing program is HD Tune (free edition) or HD Tune Pro, which gives you Disk Health Info, S.M.A.R.T. parameters, and you can test the file data transfer rates across the disk. Here's the link www.hdtune.com And if there is any concern about the controller chip on the MB, rather than the HDD itself, consider downloading the latest chipset drivers from the MB website. Share xxx666yyy777 1 August 2011 10:00:28 Thanks - HDTune did indeed help me solve the problem. It reported a warning related to a SMART factor that could indicate a bad cable. I checked the MB and the cable in question was indeed loose. After resetting it, no more atapi problems! Its a shame that neither the Seagate nor WD tools reported that issue and showed the SMART status

Comments: EventID.Net As per Microsoft: "There was a parity error during a direct memory access (DMA) transfer. Typically, this means that the cable connecting the drive to the computer is failing. Replace the cable". See MSW2KDB for more details. x 16 EventID.Net http://www.eventid.net/display-eventid-5-source-atapi-eventno-2291-phase-1.htm First check your IDE cables and connectors. A faulty cable can cause the error. Then check the hard disk for errors. Sometimes a faulty controller may also cause the error. If there are no hardware problem you can use Driver Verifier (verifier.exe) or other diagnostic tools to check all the drivers and find the culprit. Using Verifier somebody found the error was caused by a Zone Alarm driver. Uninstalling Zone Alarm solved the problem. For details regarding Verifier see ME244617. x 13 Private comment: Subscribers only. See example of private comment Search: Google - Bing - Microsoft - Yahoo - EventID.Net Queue (0) - More links... Comments: Anonymous In my case, this problem was solved after uninstalling KASPERSKI AV/IS. x 11 Anonymous In my case, atapi error error indicated \Device\Ide\IdePort1. Upon going to registry, went to regedit and navigated to hkey_local_machine\hardware\devicemap\scsi\scsi port 1 - noticed it was labeled as "cdrom peripheral" - replaced cdrom drive, no more errors. x 4 John Panton Message: IDE-port 0 not responding within the timeout period. It could be HDD 0 or IDE/ATAPI controller, but first: - Check the cables from the MB to the HDD. - Check device ide ideport0 the operation of any other devices connected to the same cable as HDD 0- even disconnect any CD/DVD drives on that cable. x 9 Alexander Solano In my case, this problem was solved after uninstalling Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5.0. There are known compatibility issues between Windows XP and versions of Easy CD Creator earlier than version 5.1. See ME310628 for details. x 51 Peter Hayden In one case, a computer was running Windows 2000 Professional SP4 that was configured to boot from a SCSI drive. An IDE drive was temporarily added in order to perform some work on it. When the computer was started this event was repeated four times and then followed by EventID 11 from source atapi. Windows showed the disk as normal but Partition Magic 8.0 showed it as "BAD". Remove or replace the faulty hard drive. x 54 Anonymous Getting this error could mean that your hard disk controller is not working well. Check to see if you have difficulty accessing the hard disk (slow), or if the hard disk is having trouble powering up. Even though the controller is not working well you can still get all ok when running S.M.A.
