the certificate FQDN. This specific issue is a bit different.  This issue is that when you are trying to make a connection to Autodiscover via https://autodiscover.domain.com, the Outlook client does https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/940726 not successfully make a connection to it and you get a certificate error.  The certificate you see pop up in Outlook during the error isn't even the certificate that is located on Exchange.  The certificate error that pops up shows you that it is finding the certificate on your company's public website. So the million dollar question? Why the error http://www.shudnow.net/2013/07/26/outlook-certificate-error-and-autodiscover-domain-com-not-working/ and why is it showing the company's public website's certificate. Well first, let's explore a little on the steps External Autodiscover goes through in order to find Exchange. Internal Autodiscover and the Service Connection Point The Autodiscover service is a mechanism that can do several things. Automatic Mailbox Creation Redirects Outlook 2007/2010/2013 clients to point to the correct server in which their mailbox is located Provides URLs to Web Services for Outlook 2007/2010/2013 When you first launch your Outlook client (Outlook 2007 or above required for Autodiscover access), it will search Active Directory for a Service Connection Point (SCP) record.  Every time a CAS Server is installed, it will register this SCP record within Active Directory in the following location: CN=Autodiscover,CN=Protocols,CN=,CN=Servers,CN=Exchange Administrative Group,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=First Organization,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services When an Outlook client has the ability to find this record because they are domain joined and on the internal network, they will locate all SCP records and will choose the oldest SCP.  If you have slow links or want to scope what SCPs are available to users in various sites, Autodiscover Site

Availability Migration You are here: Home / Outlook 2007 clients display certificate mismatch error after mailbox migrationOutlook 2007 clients display certificate mismatch error after http://exchangeserverpro.com/outlook-2007-clients-display-certificate-mismatch-error-after-mailbox-migration/ mailbox migration February 27, 2009 by Paul Cunningham 8 Comments When an Outlook 2007 user has their mailbox migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 they may start https://exchangemaster.wordpress.com/2013/05/07/new-behavior-in-outlook-2013-causing-certificate-errors-in-some-environments/ seeing a certificate mismatch error appear when launching Outlook.  This problem will occur if the following conditions are true: the internal DNS namespace does not match the autodiscover certificate external DNS namespace (eg domain.local for internal and domain.com.au for external) a third party SSL certificate matching the external namespace has been applied to the IIS instance on the Client Access Server (eg cas.domain.com.au) The certificate mismatch occurs because the Autodiscover Service and/or Availability Service use the FQDN of the Exchange 2007 host in their URL autodiscover certificate error (eg https://server.domain.local/AutoDiscover/AutoDiscover.xml) but the IIS instance has an SSL certificate that does not match that name. To resolve this issue you can change the URL of the Autodiscover and Availablity services to match the name on the certificate, which you can do with the following shell commands. [PS] C:\>Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity cas.domain.local -AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri https://cas.domain.com.au/Autodiscover/Autodiscover.xml [PS] C:\>Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory -Identity "EWS (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https://cas.domain.com.au/EWS/Exchange.asmx -ExternalUrl https://cas.domain.com.au/EWS/Exchange.asmx As long as your internal clients are resolving the external name cas.domain.com.au directly to your Client Access Server this should resolve the certificate mismatch error. in someenvironments Posted by Andrew S Higginbotham 16 Background: I originally discovered this issue back in early Feb & let a couple people on the Exchange Product Team know about it via the TAP but it seems to be affecting more customers than initially thought so I thought I’d share. In Outlook 2007 through Outlook 2010 all domain-joined Outlook clients would initially query Active Directory for AutoDiscover information & ultimately find a Service Connection Point (SCP) value that would point them to their nearest Client Access Server's AutoDiscover virtual directory. If that failed then they would revert to using DNS like any non-domain-joined Outlook client. The order of this non-domain-joined lookup is as follows: https://company.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml https://autodiscover.company.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml Local XML File http://company.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml (looking for a redirect website) SCP AutoDiscover Record Why it ever looked to https://company.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml I’ll never really know because honestly I’ve never come across a customer who had it deployed that way; most have https://autodiscover.company.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml but I imagine when Exchange 2007 was first being developed they weren’t exactly sure how customers would be implementing AutoDiscover. Issue: The above methods have served us well since Exchange 2007 timeframe but for some reason the Outlook team decided to try & implement some giddyup into Outlook & try to speed up the process. They decided to have domain-joined Outlook 2013 clients query both the SCP values in AD as well as the DNS records at the same time. If an SCP record was found it would still be used but in the event it failed then it would already have the DNS response ready to go. Great idea, however there’s one problem in the implementation. If Outlook 2013 encounters any kind of Certificate error while doing the simultaneous DNS query then you will receive a pop-up in Outlook about the cert. I actually stumbled upon this while in the middle of the scenario below: That’s right, I actually get a certificate pop-up for my lab’s domain name (ash15.c
