502 Bad Gateway Fix
502 error Sep 09, 2013 06:48 AM|ahmedilyas|LINK Hi. I am not sure if this is the right place to post this. I created a web farm for a test environment with 2 secondary 502 bad gateway nginx means servers and 1 primary. All works fine. using WS2008R2 + SP1 and IIS 7.5 The web farm works great but then I get this error sometimes and thereafter fails to work: 502 - Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server. There is a problem with the page you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. When the Web 504 bad gateway server (while acting as a gateway or proxy) contacted the upstream content server, it received an invalid response from the content server. I am using the ARR module in IIS and set to round robin to illustrate that the website hits different servers. what am I missing? IIS 7.0, IIS 7.5, and IIS 8.0 define the following HTTP status codes that indicate a more specific cause of a 502 error: ◦502.1 - CGI application timeout. Solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942059/en-us ◦502.2 - Bad gateway: Premature Exit. Solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942057 ◦502.3 - Bad Gateway: Forwarder Connection Error (ARR). ◦502.4 - Bad Gateway: No Server (ARR). Basics by Tim Fisher Updated October 02, 2016 The 502 Bad Gateway error is an HTTP status code that means that one server received an invalid response from another server. The Bad Gateway error can be https://forums.iis.net/t/1201412.aspx?502+error customized by each website. While fairly uncommon, different web servers do describe this error differently. Here are some common ways you might see it.How the 502 Error Appears"502 Bad Gateway""502 Service Temporarily Overloaded""Error 502""Temporary Error (502)" "502 Proxy Error""502 Server Error: The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request""HTTP 502""502. That's an error""Bad Gateway: The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server""HTTP http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/502error.htm Error 502 - Bad Gateway"The 502 Bad Gateway error displays inside the Internet browser window, just as web pages do.Twitter's famous "fail whale" error that says Twitter is over capacity is actually a 502 Bad Gateway error (even though a 503 Error would make more sense).A Bad Gateway error received in Windows Update generates a 0x80244021 error code or the message WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_BAD_GATEWAY.When Google services, like Google Search or Gmail, are experiencing a 502 Bad Gateway, they often show Server Error, or sometimes just 502, on the screen.502 Bad Gateway errors are completely independent of your particular setup, meaning that you could see one in any browser, on any operating system, and on any device. Cause of 502 Bad Gateway ErrorsOften, Bad Gateway errors are caused by issues between servers online that you have no control over. However, sometimes there is no real issue but your browser thinks there is one thanks to an issue with your browser, a problem with your home networking equipment, or some other in-your-control reason. Note: Microsoft IIS web servers often give more information about the cause of a particular 502 Bad Gateway error by adding an extra digit after the 502 as in HTTP Error 502.3 - Web server received an i

SSL is enabled with the same certificate on the ARR server and the IIS web farm servers and I am not using SSL offloading. The servers are using Shared Config so the setup is theoretically identical. Interestingly, when the ARR round robin configuration hits ONE of the servers, it returns a "502 - Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server." error. Another server returns the page fine with SSL working. If I point 502 bad gateway my browser to the "bad" server directly, without ARR, it works fine in HTTPS / SSL mode. I checked the configurations and found nothing different between the servers and even enabled Failed Request Tracing on the ARR server, which wasn't that helpful but I saw a different 502.3 error within the log. Why would I get a 502 error of any kind, especially on just one server in the farm when they are configured identically with shared config and certificates are on all servers? iis ssl arr share|improve this question asked Nov 5 '15 at 5:35 stackonfire 1343 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote Let me answer my own question... I disabled "Require Server Name Indication" and suddenly everything worked. This is weird because SNI was enabled on all servers in the farm for the same site but for one of them, unchecking it made it all work. My theory is this: Even with shared config, SSL binding information doesn't really transfer from one server to the other, from the IP to the certificate. As many of you know, you still have to manually go to the other server and select the certificate. So that was a clue about how the setups could be different. I actually believe the setups were the same visually but somewhere under the hood something was different for one binding somehow. Anyway, I spent hours on this issue and nowhere did I read anything about "Require Server Name Indication" being related to a 502
