It won't even boot up in Safe mode, looks like he may have a virus of some description. After selecting safe mode, the screen goes blue and gives an error message: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78A2524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000) Any suggestions how I can fix this???? Cheers Paul. So the error in itself is not necessarily significant. Some details about what occurred with the system before the cry for help by your son...would be of greater benefit than focusing on that error message, IMO.You might gain by reading STOP 7B Errors .You might also take a look at 7B, left column at http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.htm , to see the complexity involved in trying to determine cause of that particular error.Louis Forum Rules Report Topics For Staff Action BC Forums, L

The problem is that before I installed Windows, I didn't realize the hardware setup was set to SATA Compatibility mode, rather than AHCI mode. With compatibility mode, I can see the hard drive performance is suffering. I remembered something about Microsoft's KB articleError message occurs after you change the SATA mode of the boot drivehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976in which it suggests you can just install the SATA driver, enable it in the registry, switch hardware setup to AHCI mode and reboot and you are running SATA.I tried doing following the above instructions using the Intel AHCI drivers on Lenovo's website, and stillgot a Stop 7B "Inaccesible Boot Device" when I did. However, posts on the Web suggest if you forget to enable AHCI mode in hardware before installing Windows, you cannot switch the boot drive to AHCI mode-you are out of luck and must reinstall Windows from scratch.I used to remember the theory here, but I've forgotten it now. Obviously I know that it needs the SATA driver to boot via a SATA controller in SATA mode, but I can't remember if this trick can be done AFTER you've installed Windows with the hardware set to Compatibility mode? If you should be able to , why am I still getting a BSOD when I followed Microsoft's instructions? I really don't want to have to reinstall everything from scratch, and I could swear I've got the MS thing to work in the past, but I don't remember.
