Can't believe there are dozens of possible causes to this vexing problem of a blue screen error windows xp blue screen after doing a Vista log-in. I was about to render my laptop a very expensive Frisbee out a 10-story window. Thanks to many well meaning souls out there who came up with their own solutions, I tried one after much trial and error and solved my problem (I realize not everyone is going to have the same cause/solution). What worked for me was someone's suggestion to boot to safe mode with command prompt, type the MSCONFIG command, disable all startup programs and disable all services. By process of elimination, I found the culprits to be Windows Event Collection and Windows Event Logging. Still using MSCONFIG, I disabled them, re-booted, renamed \windows\system32\winevt\logs\system.evtx to \windows\system32\winevt\logs\ystem.evtxOLD, re-booted, enabled the two previously disabled Windows Event services in MSCONFIG, re-booted. After logging in, checked Event Log in Control Panel/Admin to make sure it was working. MSCONFIG is a life saver. Again, my thanks to those who have toiled with this problem and offered their solutions. When I try to start explorer manually via task manager, it says that it cannot find it and to make sure I typed it correctly. I can access everything just fine in safe mode but not in normal. When I open the command prompt it says the directory is c:\windows\system32 instead of c:\users\home (home is my user name). I think there may be a virus or something that is preventing explorer from starting in normal mode. If anyone can offer any suggestions, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. BSODs appear when Microsoft Windows encounters a critical error it can't recover from, blue screen requiring a reboot and possibly resulting in lost work. A blue screen of death is the worst type of error a computer can experience, unlike an application crash, which doesn't bring down the whole system. A BSOD is the result of low-level software crashing -- or faulty hardware. What Causes Blue Screens of Death Blue screens are generally caused by problems with your computer's blue screen error hardware or issues with its hardware driver software. Standard software shouldn't be able to cause blue screens -- if an application crashes, it will do so without taking the operating system out with it. Blue screens are caused by hardware problems and issues with low-level software running in the Windows kernel. A blue screen occurs when Windows encounters a "STOP Error." This critical failure causes Windows to crash and stop working. The only thing Windows can do is stop the computer and restart it. This can lead to data loss, as programs don't have a chance to save their open data -- ideally, programs should continuously save their data so a blue screen of death or other type of error won't result in data loss. When a blue screen occurs, Windows automatically creates a "minidump" file that contains information about the crash and saves it to your disk. You can view information about these minidumps to help identify the cause of the blue screen. Windows Restarts When a BSOD Appears By default, Windows automatically restarts the computer whenever it encounters a blue screen of death. If your c
