vote I have a virtual (VMware) Server 2008 R2 (data center). I deleted the original NIC (adapter cannot rename this connection virtualbox type E1000). Next I added a new NIC (adapter type VMXNET 3). I tried to rename this new NIC from (Local Area Connection 2) to (Local Area Connection) and

Cannot Rename This Connection Genymotion

I get this message: "Cannot rename this connection. A connection with the name you specified already exists. Specify a different name." I read that this is a 2008-R2 bug, that Orphan's NIC's on a virtual server. I also tried to apply this Hotfix - KB2344941, but I get this error: "The update is not applicable to your computer." cannot rename this connection server 2012 Thanks in advance for any assistance. Each subkey should have another subkey, 'Connection'. The value of the Connection key is the name of the network adapter. You can check if any value is “Local Area Connection” . If yes, you can delete GUID key. Besides, you also need to delete the same GUID key under the registry keys below: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Adapters HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces After that, the network adapter would be deleted and that name would be freed up. In addition, please perform a backup before you delete the GUID keys. Best regards, Susie Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help. Excellent tip, but if you are doing this on a Windows 2008 R2 server, remember to open your console (cmd.exe) up with Admin rights. (Hold down the shift key and right click on the Command Prompt icon. Otherwise, you won't see the hidden devices. March 22, 2013 at 11:46 AM Eddie Lopez said... machine. On a couple of occasions I have had issues with network connections, it seems windows retains the old imaged server nic info, but it sees the hardware on the new server as new. Therefore it will not add them teaming or call them the right name if you have renamed them. On trying to rename them to the same name you had on the original machine, you will get an error saying the name already exits. But in network connections they will not show up, even if you start device manager and select view\hidden devices they will not show. You need to run the following from an elevated command prompt SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1 and then open device manager, select view\show hidden devices. The devices that are no longer present on the new machine will be greyed out and can be uninstalled. You will now be able to rename the connection.
